In case anyone is interested, I wound up exactly where I thought I didn't want to be. HA! Way out south. We did wind up at a great compromise thought- my husband really wanted space, I really wanted to be able to walk to things, and we both got it. And we got an absolute steal due to the seller's prior sale falling through, so we should be able to sell quickly if we need to in a few years. We can walk to a movie theater, some restaurants, ice cream, a Walgreens, the grocery, school, library, park, and the pool. Not nearly as cool as Brookside, but I hope we're going to like it. I came really, really close to buying this: 301 W 66th Street, Kansas City, MO 64113 | Listing Information | Kansas City Homes for Sale with Reece & Nichols. but it needs like 25k of work IMO to really make it shine, and I just didn't have the time. Thanks again for everyone's help and suggestions, it was really useful!

Oh, and I talked to Community School #1 extensively and they seem like an amazing option for anyone who is looking for a great smaller non parochial school!
