Visiting KC in July for All Star Game! Need Advice (Union: hotels, college)

Hey guys

Me and my girlfriend are going to be coming out to KC from Connecticut for about a week or so in July for the All Star Game. We're starting to look around for hotels early just to see whats out there. She's been there a couple times before with her family, but I never have

We're in our early 20s, trying to find a hotel in a good area around some good restaurants, bars, things to see/do, etc..

I noticed that Kaufmann Stadium seems out of the way on a map compared to where downtown is, so I guess we'd want a hotel near downtown?

You would want to stay either downtown or the plaza. Because you will be in town for the all star game, I would try to stay downtown because MLB will have their fan festival at the convention center.

One of the better hotels downtown is the Hilton President Hotel, which is in a historic structure. Another historic hotel is the Hotel Phillips. There is also a Crown Plaza, Marriott and Holliday Inn near the convention center.

The plaza has many more hotels and will be a great place to stay and visit, but you would have to take a bus or cab to all star events downtown.

If you can’t find anything downtown or the plaza, then crown center would work too. It’s between downtown and the plaza and has two large hotels. It’s more of a family friendly area and less night life, but it’s still a great area and a great place to stay and it’s very close to downtown. Most of the city’s top attractions are within easy reach of the Downtown/Crown Center/Plaza corridor such as the WWI Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball museum, the Nelson Atkins Museum, Union Station, City Market, Kauffman Performing Arts Center, College Basketball Experience and much more.

What I would not do is stay near the stadiums or in the suburbs. The area around the stadiums is not unsafe or anything, but is run down and somewhat industrial and there is just nothing out there (right near the stadiums). I’m sure the downtown through plaza area will fill up fast for that week and then you will be left with far flung locations like the airport, overland park, blue springs etc, so I would book something as soon as you can. You can’t really go wrong in the city, but a suburban hotel would make your trip much less enjoyable.

All good advice from kcmo. Staying downtown is definitely your best bet if you want to be close to all the action!
