That's not how journalism is supposed to work. You cover the story the same always. Obviously that's hard in actual practice, but I think it's insane that no one is talking about this.

People have an extremely hard time talking about suicide (unless it's that joking "I'm so bored I could slit my wrists" kind of talk), but if the mayor or some local celebrity had killed themselves, they'd surely be discussing it by now.

It's only respectful if it's across the board for everyone.

FOX 4 Statement on the Passing of Don Harman
Don Harman, a beloved meteorologist and personality on the FOX 4 morning show passed away Tuesday evening. To all of us, Don was like family, and the news comes as a great shock to all the folks he worked with here at FOX 4.

President and General Manager Cheryl McDonald said “We are very saddened by this tragic loss. Don wasn’t just our Meteorologist, he was a part of our family and we loved him. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed.”

Don brightened our mornings for more than 10 years and he made his mark on Kansas City television. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we ask that in this time of sorrow that you respect them and their need for privacy in their moment of grief.

^When folks on Twitter have been talking about it for nearly 12 hours now, yes, I think the media has a responsibility to cover it. Even if it's hard.

I'm happy to see they're beginning to do that.

I just read the news online at the KC Star. This is tragic. My thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

Was it confirmed that it was suicide? But even it that be the case; I cannot judge him. One has to be suffering immensely to take their own life and none of us know what Don was going through.

Suicide hasn't been confirmed, but given that they're not saying what happened, you can be sure that it was.

I always wanted to be a meteorologist (research) but never went that direction due to the extreme math requirement involved.

He always did exhibit some tendencies of depression now that I look back on it, even years ago.

He will definitely be missed and was one of my favorite OCMs when I lived in KC.
He certainly did exhibit tendencies of depression as well as social ackwardness. But jeez, he was a lovely person. He may not have known it though. I'm not sure why as I didn't know Don personally, but this brings tears to my eyes. It's so sad. It's a good reason for all of us to let others we interact with everyday know they are appreciated. I will truly miss Don Harman, as I'm sure many others will.

Fox 4, WDAF, held off announcing the news of Harman’s death because it wanted to reach Harman’s 79-year-old father, Gordon, in Ohio. But he was traveling, and in the 18 hours that it took to locate him, word leaked out of the station and onto social networks and blogs.

Fox 4’s dilemma in reporting Harman’s death was understandable, said Robert Steele, who teaches journalism ethics at DePauw University in Indiana.

“At some point, however, it’s very difficult to hold back on the story about this person who is very much a public figure,” Steele said. “It can be challenging finding that balance between reporting the truth, which is a journalistic obligation, and minimizing harm, which is a professional obligation
