If interested in attending lectures on creative practices, some related to KC, TEDx KC holds a few events each year either at the Nelson Atkins Musuem and next year, at the new Performing Arts Center. They tend to sell out so need to signup when announced.

One of the most interesting I thought was Marcin Jakubowski N of KC who created an 'open source civilization starter kit' using common parts. Various machines and tools can be built from a core set of interchangeable modular components. All open source. Awesome guy with a cool story.

Here are vids from a past event...

Quixotic, a creative dance troupe based in KC that uses on stage live projection performed at one (second half is pretty cool)...

Linda Hall Library at UMKC (a major independent scientific research library) also has speakers from around the planet related to the sciences. I've been attending most of them over last few years. If interested in meeting some smart people in KC (self-ordained intellectuals as well as justifiable ones), many tend to hang here. I've hooked up with some pretty fascinating people...

They also have a brown bag lunch series with local speakers but 2012 hasn't been scheduled yet. Some previous were focused on the Google fiber project in KC and nuclear energy vs. alternatives.
