KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For anyone with friends or family members visiting in December, there's a special exhibit now on display at the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial that's tied to the holidays.

Called “Christmas During War,” dozens of holiday items are on display until Jan. 8 including a Santa Claus costume and mask a YMCA worker wore in 1918 as he served during the war.

Denise Rendina is the Senior Vice President of the National World War I Museum. She said, “The mask itself was made in Germany which was who the Americans were fighting against and so it’s a really unique and one-of-a-kind object here in the museum."

Visitors will also see holiday propaganda posters, hand embroidered Christmas cards and gifts soldiers received as they served during the holidays away from their families.

“You think back at history about what it must have been like, especially when communication wasn't so frequent and these people were far away from the ones they love but still trying to honor the holiday tradition,” said Rendina.
