KC finally gets car sharing. Is just UMKC/Rockhurst area for now. Plaza and Downtown need this too as there are many car-less people.

Best. News. Ever.

ZipCar rocks my world, and I hope they'll expand. Would be great to see a few parking lots scattered along Main on the Max line. That would really make living car-less in KC easy peasy.

66 Bucks a day is kind of steep, you can rent a car for a day at like the Midtown Enterprise or Avis for like 30 bucks for the whole day with unlimited miles. Do you have to fill it back up with gas?

Yeah, $66 is pretty steep. Probably only useful by the hour.

A lot of people use zip cars around here and they are not really for day rentals, but hourly stuff, short drive, errands etc. Seems like when people want to rent for a day, they go to a rental place like if they want to take a car to the beach or something.

^Exactly. Zip Car is great for a trip to Trader Joe's, to take your pup to the vet or to get to a doctor's appointment in Shawnee or something. Also remember that ZipCar covers insurance so you don't have to -- a big part of your yearly fee (looks to be $50 in KC) and your hourly fee go to that alone. Think about the $1000-1500 a year we all spend on insurance.

But when you want to run away to the Ozarks for the weekend, renting a car through a traditional service is still the best way to go.

Occasional Driving Plan – Zipcar

Edit: And gas is included!

One key reason they start in university areas is because they allow 18yo drivers whereas most car rentals don't allow drivers under 25. Bike sharing and free bus passes are part of the UMKC program...

KC and Chicago are only two Midwest metros with ZipCar, other than college towns. And..

Quote:
Hourly rates are from $7 on weekdays and $8 on weekends, and daily rates are from $66 on weekdays and $72 on weekends. The rate includes 180 free miles, with additional miles charged at 45 cents. If you are in an accident, a damage fee of up to $500 may apply. And there is a penalty for late returns.

The first two Zipcars, a new Toyota Prius and Ford Focus, will be based on the north side of UMKC’s University Center.

Serafino said more cars might be added depending on the demand. The program can grow quickly. Stanford University started with three cars in fall 2007 and now has 40 on its campus.

Graor said the River Market, Crossroads Arts District and County Club Plaza area might have the kind of population density that could be attractive Zipcar locations.

How does zipcar work? Where are the cars located? How do you get to the car? Can you take the car from one location and leave it at another?

Sounds like for their university locations, you can't leave the car in other locations.

http://www.zipcar.com/how/

You need to reserve via internet or phone app to get access to car. Can just drop off back in spot and not have to do anything to 'checkout'.

Quote:
Walk to the car, then just hold your Zipcard to the windshield. The doors will unlock, and it's all yours!
Sounds like for the UMKC version when you sign up it includes free bus pass and bike rental. Not sure of details though.
