KC metro does have a large number of indie/foreign film screens for its size. That part won't be a problem.

I moved to Westport a year ago and would definitely recommend it. It has more life to it than most other areas of KC and, as other posters have mentioned, there are several independent coffee shops, bars and restaurants. The Tivoli cinema is a bonus as well. As far as safety goes, I've never had (or seen) any problems (though I am male). I would, however, be careful about which areas I walk around at night.
On the whole, there's plenty to do in KC for five months though. There are many good restaurants (one word of warning; the portion sizes are huge!) and the local brewery (Boulevard) make some excellent beers. There's also a fairly decent music scene here as well, particularly at the Beaumont Club or Riot Room (both in Westport).

Which areas do suggest avoiding at night and why?

^We lived in Westport Manor, which was on Pennsylvania just south of 39th street and I wouldn't walk home home on my own (as a woman) late at night because of the "dead zone" spot with the SunFresh lot and parking garage right there -- it was well lit but had less street traffic than farther south. That's just one of those good "city sense" kind of behaviors that's not necessarily indicative of a wildly dangerous neighborhood, but just an understand of how criminals think.

CD won't allow posting competing links to sites but earlier I posted crime index by zipcode. KC's Westport violent crime index was obviously higher than suburbs and the Plaza but came in lower/better than Downtown/Uptown Minneapolis, Georgetown/Dupont Circle DC, many of the better Chicago hoods and Westport scored much better than the best parts of St. Louis city.

The best news that just happened in Westport... America's Pub has just closed. It is often attributed to being the major problem creator to late night Westport issues. Won't magically solve everything but it should help. Westport will always be a bar district and urban bar districts _will_ have late night issues, but they are catering more to the 30+ crowd lately and trying to become a midtowner bar district rather than a metro party zone, which P&L downtown has now become.

Good to hear that perspective from someone who is from the UK.
