Just in case it hasn't been mentioned: KCMO school district lost its state accreditation as of 1/1/12. This impacts college acceptance and transfers to other schools.

OP asked for a 3 car garage type community with great schools. This would not be Brookside, Mission, PV, and some of the others mentioned. You want Shawnee. Look at the Gray Oaks neighborhood. This fits your bill completely. The Desoto school district is amazing. Grey Oaks is walkable to all the schools, grocery store, restaurants, ice cream/froyo, and more. No, you won't find boutique shopping but that doesn't seem to be your top priority. Western Shawnee is a VERY neighborly, family-friendly community. Almost to the point where you lack privacy, really.

I would look at other western Shawnee neighborhoods too. There are 2 high schools in Shawnee. Grey Oaks feeds into Mill Valley. The other HS is Desoto High School, which is the one I'd prefer.

Good luck!

Oops. I did not mean to imply that Mission, PV have had schools. I meant to say that these are not 3 car garage communities. I hear these areas can be pretty snooty too. I think all the KC metro schools besides the KCMO school district are fine - some better than others, of course. I think the best ones are Desoto and Olathe.

Here's a listing for Grey Oaks:
