You could try areas near the Plaza or the Westport area in Kansas City, MO. These areas are popular with younger single people. Rent will be higher in the Plaza area compared with Westport. If you want to live in Johnson County their are plenty of apartments to choose from there with a wide range in prices. If you want to live in Overland Park the distance to the Plaza area would only be about 30 minutes if you want plenty of restaurants, shopping, and a variety of younger people.

For a young single white male, live in the midtown area. Anywhere close to Westport or the Plaza would be good choices. Rent in the Plaza region will be a little high but the further away you get the more affordable it is. Be careful going too far East of this region (East of Troost) as you can get into areas with higher crime rates. Some neighborhoods that come to mind include brookside, valentine, westwood, among others. You might even consider getting a loft near downtown/crown center/river market which is an up and coming area, however the commute will be a little bit longer and it is more urban (but being male as opposed to female probably less of an issue).
Overland park is more of a region for familes with 2.5 kids. The commute from midtown will not be that bad and you will not be fighting the general rush hour flow.

If I were young and single, I would want to live in or very near to the Plaza. It's really nice, pretty, lots to do.

Since you're a Chicagoan, I'd be aware that the atmosphere of Overland Park is probably, for comparison's sake, much like what you would find in an area like Naperville. I recently moved to the Plaza (decent rent, actually, too, cheaper than Chicago for sure), and everyone in my building seems to be young adult, no real families, etc., people living the city single life.

I would also check out the Brookside/Waldo area - little farther south but right off Wornall and Ward Parkway, still within minutes of the Plaza & Westport..plus some good bars and restaurants right in the area.
(I myself am taking off for Denver in 2 weeks..ha ha ha)
