We are a male couple and we have a daughter. We are considering a move to KC, but since it's in the Bible belt and also a red state, weren't so sure about if we'd meet other gay parents... also how our child would be received in school, etc.

Anyone know of resources for gay families in the area? How conservative is the city?

Neither Kansas or Missouri are hardcore red states -- although Kansas is certainly moving in that direction, HHS director Kathleen Sebelius was governor not so very long ago. I know a lot of gay people who live here in the city, but I know less about gay families. I have friends who are lesbians that live in Lee's Summit. Living in the city is more difficult because of the school issue (the city schools are not good) but there are options out there -- my boss sends her kid to Border Star Montessori in Brookside and has been very happy with it. So my advice: you'll be fine and well accepted if you stay as close to the city as possible. Outside of that, it's going to be a little more person to person.

KC is not in the bible belt. As far as that goes, I think Richmond is more bible belty than KC. VA is southern, MO and KS are midwestern. Pretty different.

KC metro is below US avg with religious identity, but there are a handful of in-your-face evangelicals..

KCMO is in top 25 for % of domestic partners of larger cities. It's a non-issue in the city but for suburbs, it depends.

The domestic partner list is KCMO city, the religion list is metro.

You'll be fine. KC is not in the Bible Belt (we've already had a thread about this).

Missouri has generally been considered a swing state, though it's moved to a lean Red for the last several elections. However, the whole state is not conservative. The cities, KC and STL, are rather liberal, with the suburbs being moderate and the rural areas being very conservative.

Stay in the city and you'll be perfectly fine- I know numerous gay parents in urban KCMO - you won't be alone.
