What can anyone tell me about Atherton, Missouri? It seems sort of like Birmingham in that it's a small area that never took off. Can anyone give me some background on it?

There are some posters here from Atherton and they're much more qualified to respond. I have some family roots there but that was ages ago. I think the reason why it "never took off" was the lack of roadway infrastructure. 40 years ago Blue Springs was a shadow of its present self, but sitting right on 70 and 7 gave suburbanites and businesses ready-access to work and transportation.

Atherton was merely some sort of railroad stop. Plus it's in the floodpain. Plus it's pretty distant from the immediate metro. Birmingham has barely been built in, and it's closer in. The only thing interesting I can think of Atherton is that there was some some sort of POW camp there.

Atherton = potatoes

Which is what the POWs were paid to help harvest.
