My daughter will start a job as an RN at Truman Medical Center on Hospital Hill. I have been telling her that there are apartments north of the river that would be nice to live in, a relatively short commute, and affordable. She would like to spend no more than $800 a month on a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment in a large complex (so that maintenance requests will be dealt with quickly) - hopefully a SAFE complex with amenities like washer/dryers (or at least W/D hookups, not just laundry rooms), an exercise room, pool, and the possibility of a place where she could have her 70 lb. golden retriever with her.

Can anyone weigh in with names of specific complexes and give us an idea of commute times (how bad is traffic?) from various places? I'm thinking in particular of the area up I-29 toward the airport and east of there, perhaps along Barry Road.

I lived in the area of Vivion Road and North Oak Trafficway 25 years ago, and my commute from home to my downtown office was only about 20 minutes. I understand Truman is a little further south of downtown, and she may live a little further north if she ends up north of the river.

Thanks for any input!

Why north of the river? Why not somewhere closer like the Plaza or Downtown area for a shorter commute? Plenty of safe, large complexes with amenities.

Commute times should be about 30 minutes from anywhere along Barry Road. I used to live at 100th and North Oak and worked at 31st and Broadway and could make it in 25-35 minutes, barring accidents or bridge problems. Since the replacement of the Paseo Bridge with the Bond Bridge the I-35 commute has improved considerably.

Some newer, larger complexes along Barry Road/M-152 (I know nothing of the rental ranges or pet policies) are Riverstone, west of Zona Rosa on north side of 152; Manor Homes at Fox Crest, 152 and Line Creek Parkway; Carrington Park, Platte Purchase Rd. between Barry and 152; Cordillera Ranch, south side 152 east of Shoal Creek Parkway; and Carrington Park, north of 152 on Flintlock.

There are also a newer complex called the Province at Briarcliff, Vivion Road just west of 169. The commute would be even better there.

My biggest concerns about downtown/plaza area are cost, parking availability (for her and for guests), and a place that will allow a large dog. But if you know of specific large, safe complexes in that area, I'd love to have the names.

Thanks for the names of units north of the river. We will check on those!

That's not a bad commute. I lived at N. Oak and Vivion, worked at the Commerce
building and made it in about 15-20 minutes.

She might check out Westport Manor. I only see a 2 BR on Craigslist at the moment, but they might have a 1 bedroom coming available shortly, so it would be worth checking on. The apartments are beautifully updated with hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. The complex is gated, so parking is easy and safe. Guests can find very easy street parking on the block. They have W/D hookups and for an additional fee a stackable W/D unit can be rented. And, the best part, is that they're extremely dog friendly. No breed or size restrictions at all. When I lived there a couple years ago their 1 bedrooms were running at $645.

I imagine she'll be working long hours at strange times, so living closer to work would, in my mind, be a huge positive for her.
