Because we don't have a viable choice. Trust me that if the option were available, I'd ditch the car in a heartbeat.

What's a joke about the area that was allowed to vote?

Here's a little more detail on the planned streetcar stops. Engineering isn't complete yet so could change...

And again, it will be free to use.

More details here...

Discussions to extend streetcar to UMKC going on here...
Phase 2 streetcar to UMKC

And also talk of another line along Independence Ave through NE Side.
Phase 2 streetcar on Independence Avenue

The streetcar proponents who got the first segment going are now meeting with neighborhood associations along both of these lines. There's a concerted effort to extend before the first line even starts construction.

Why are they stopping it at Union Station? It should go all the way to the Plaza.

That's exactly what they said about the lite rail in Phoenix. Cost too much, Phoenix is to spread out, no one will ride it etc.. Now that thing is jammed packed all the time and the Phoenix burbs are vying for lines of their own. San Diego and Salt Lake City experienced the same scenario and now their trains a packed as well. Mass trasportation can only serve to improve a city.

It was easier to get a 2 mile quickstarter out of the gate approval wise than to try get the whole stretch in first phase. Will likely extend sooner than later. Good chance extending to Plaza (UMKC actually) is approved before first segment completed and that the build just continues non-stop. Timing likely will depend on how its funded. NE Side (E of downtown) is also a possible second line - is up to them to fund it if no Fed help. Commuter rail to E burbs is also picking up a little momentum for a vote and may have more tangible grip once streetcar in city core looks real to everyone.

KC wants to get neighbors onboard streetcars - KansasCity.com

Quote:
Construction won’t begin until spring on Kansas City’s two-mile streetcar system, but already the city is talking to neighbors about its expansion.

Mayor Sly James began recruiting nearby communities last week to consider connecting with the streetcar system that will, at least at its start, run primarily along Main Street.
Word is the City is close to issuing RFP for Phase 2 study.

I have always thought of streetcars as being a very local and urban means of transportation and not for long commutes like into the northland. That would be a lot of infrastructure cost (crossing the MO river etc) for a low speed, low capacity streetcar.

Just seems like the city should concentrate on building up a system in the core of the city rather than introducing suburban cities and potentially dragging things out and delaying things politically. I think trying to involve Johnson County with KCMO transit is one reason that nothing has gotten done anywhere with regard to regional transit in metro KC, even though that sucks, because KC will never have a solid transit system till JoCo and JaCo get on the same page.

Anyway, it’s awesome that KCMO is pushing this forward, but I think they need to build up the urban core with streetcars and think about different technologies for transit to the suburbs like buses, light rail, commuter rail etc.

Just my opinion though.

As to the question of route alignment, I believe it should dogleg over to Broadway somewhere around Liberty Memorial (perhaps by creating a stop right at the museum entrance.) That way, the streetcar would run right through the heart of the Westport district, and in better proximity to the shopping activity on the Plaza. Then it could cross the creek and pick up Ward parkway for a few blocks east for a UMKC terminus.

^I personally would prefer that but straight lines are easier to understand for less transient oriented, especially visitors, and that's partly the audience the streetcar targets. Is highly likely it will go straight down Main then Bside Blvd to UMKC and eventually Bside shops. Would like to see a Broadway MAX line to address direct Westport access for the locals who don't care about transit mode.

Lots more discussion here..
