I've been looking at places around the area of 45th and Roanoke can anyone tell me what the area is like? As far as crime, grocery stores, etc. Or what it's like compared to the suburbs?

The area of 45th and Roanoke (West Plaza) seems to have fairly low crime - it's definitely not anything I would be worried about.
For groceries, it is close to the Sunfresh off Sw Trfwy and Mill St. It is large, 24 hours with a wide selection although the prices and the quality of produce are not the best.

The comparison with the burbs will be similar in nature to any urban neighborhood vs suburbs. The walkability will be many magnitudes greater, being in close distance to the Plaza and Westport. However, it is still a car friendly area where parking shouldn't be an issue. The number and quality of amenities within a short drive or bike of that location - restaurants, shopping, bars, coffee shops, parks, etc - will be much better than anywhere in the burbs and you will have many more local, independent establishments in comparison to the chains in suburbia.

The demographics will be considerably younger and more liberal. It will also be more diverse than most suburbs, although West Plaza is not one of the more diverse KC hoods.
