Is not done yet to New Orleans but the I-49 stretch through MO is complete (upgraded to Interstate grade) and is now officially called I-49.

Quicker and safer, Interstate 49 becomes official - KansasCity.com

Why don't they close the streets with the stoplights on Watkins drive and make it interstate all the way-it get's so clogged up with the traffic and the lights.

Road Rage | Kansas City Strip | The Pitch

Here's a pretty good recap of the long and arduous process that finally became Bruce R. Watkins Drive.

That gives a good explanation of why it's such a horrible mess now. That's such a dangerous stretch-I hate driving it. It will take a lot of accidents and deaths before anyone will do something about it.

But will people call it I-49? StL people still call I-64 "Highway Farty".

Google Maps was just now updated to show I-49 through MO. For some reason it's in midzoom, not when zoomed out to country.

Google Maps
I was wondering when that was going to happen, but still when zoomed out it doesn't show the stretch as I-49 or at least it doesn't show an interstate shield.

The most interesting part of this article to me is where it says that, overall, creating I-49 in Missouri cost $500 million. Yet a slightly shorter stretch through the Ouachita Mountains south of Fort Smith is expected to cost 6 times thay amount at $3 billion. Looking at the map, I'm realizing 71 is not even a straight stretch south of Fort Smith. It goes every which way and is surely just 2-lane and not the highest grade 2-lane. While it looks like a fun drive to explore, it certainly isn't a viable route for most folks travelling to distant points south of Fort Smith. It looks like that stretch is what will really make a viable route to Shreveport and New Orleans.
