My husband has a job offer in KC, what I am confused about is how property tax on cars work. We own a 2010 dodge charger sxt. I have no idea how much we are going to need to register it and get plates etc. Also what is the general cost of living like there?

Where do you live now?

The cost of living in KC is pretty low. Where do you live now?

There are expensive areas and also cheaper areas. It all depends on where you want to live.

We are wanting to move to the KC area also after my husband gets out of the Army in a couple months. We live in Fort Riley, Ks now and I know the cost of living down this way is not cheap. And as for Kansas they do have property taxes on cars i paid 400 for my tags this past December. So I am curious as well if Mo. has personal property taxes

We have personal property tax in Missouri, but it's collected differently than in Kansas. The amount of tax is based on the value on the vehicles you own on January 1st of the year, but it is not payable until December of that year. The tax rate is determined by the mill levy where you live - what city, what school district, etc. etc. As an example, I have a 2008 Saturn Aura that is worth about $15,000 now I and paid about $250.00 in personal property taxes last month. I live in Kansas City, MO in the North Kansas City school district. The cost of license plates themselves is based on the horsepower of your car. IIRC, mine are about $37.50 a year.

If you move to Missouri sometime this calendar year, your first personal property taxes will be due in December, 2014 based on what you own on January 1, 2014.
