Good afternoon,

Would $2000 a month be enough to get by on living in Westport without a car and going to school? I have been reading that utilities are through the roof in KC.. I am a 31 year old single white male and have been to KC and westport a bunch of times when I was stationed at Fort Riley but never lived there and haven't been since 2008, so I don't know how much has changed.

Yes, you can live without a car. That's probably one of the easiest places in KC to be without a car. Are you attending KC Art Institute? UMKC? Somewhere else?

If you wanted to live a few blocks away, in the Southmoreland neighborhood for example, there are older homes/apartments that can probably be had for $600/month. Some of the nicer Westport places can go for $1,000 a month for a 1BR apartment, which would blow your $2,000 budget out of the water.

I live in the Plaza, and utilities are prorated and included in my very reasonable rent, so I haven't experienced any "through-the-roof"-ness.

I don't think utilities are through the roof. Who told you that? We have a 103-year-old 4,000 sq ft house in Brookside and they're under $500/month, and that's in the peak dead of winter or heat of summer. Our (previous) 2,000 sq ft house in Roeland Park was only about $250/month on average. If you are renting an older house, of course they will be more, but if you are renting an apartment, they should be minimal.

My utilities weren't even through the roof when I lived in a house and ran central air in our hotter-than-Hades summers the past couple of summers.

I don't think utilities in KC are through the roof - I would think they are below the national average. If you are especially concerned about utilities, you can find apartments that have some or all of the utilities included.

You can definitely get by on $2,000 a month, though you wouldn't be living the high life.

Ditto the above on the "through the roof" comments. Perhaps the OP heard about the recent and projected KCMO water rate hikes, which probably wouldn't even apply if he/she is in an apartment, since water is usually included.

I believe the "doubling" of the water rates is in the actual price of the water, not including the stormwater runoff and sewer charges. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
