Hi me and my girlfriend are considering moving to Kansas City, were both from Emporia and are both 24 years old and I'm expecting our first kid in October. she is a licensed cosmetologist and I have two years at college in the computer information field and I would like to try to get into that field in Kansas City. I do have 6 years of experience working in the industrial maintenance fieldl however.we are kind of looking for advice on areas to live that isnt in the middle of the city and that would be best for a young family also any advice on any rental properties and jobs would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Are you looking for kid-friendly areas with good public schools? If so, then you probably want to look on the KS side in Johnson County. Do you want to rent an apartment or a house? What is your budget for rent?

Waldo is great if you can afford to put your kids in private school. We all know that KCMO has one of the worst public school systems.

Hale Cook will hopefully change that, but it's going to be unproven for a couple years at least.

Again, the most valuable piece of information we need to help someone looking for relocation advice is:

How much are you looking to spend!?

They said they are expecting their first child. Waldo would be a great starter area and give them plenty of time to decide what to do once their first kid reaches grade school age.

It sounds like they are just starting out and probably don't have a lot to spend and that's why I said Waldo. Great location, close to the city and the suburbs but not in the city, and not in the higher priced suburbs where you are paying a premium just for the schools which you don't even need yet. I would not be afraid to send my kids to KCMO schools for the first few years anyway. It's middle school and high school where you need to really start thinking of options.

I know that schools will be something to look onto but as of now we are looking more into the job market. Since Emporia is so small she cant make very much money with her cosmetology work and i am very limited on places that pay above 10$ hourly. We kinda wanted to know if you can make it with out having a bachelors degree, we both do have post HS education however.

Also would it be worth it to look into places like overland park or the areas outside more?

It depends how much you want to spend per month. Is money no object? OP can range from $1000-$2500. Other "areas outside" can be closer to $500. Help us help you...
