This article explains the business practices and supply chain logistics of In-N-Out, and why they aren't in KC (and haven't expanded anywhere westward of CA, UT, NV, AZ, or TX ).

Lynsi Torres, In-N-Out President, Explains Why Burger Chain Doesn't Expand Across U.S.

For me, I was happy when Potbelly opened a block from me. It's the only time I've ever been that jazzed about a chain expansion.

Doesn't KC have just about everything (that is already national). In and Out is only west. They are okay, but not amazing IMO.

Lots of Potbellys here. They are nice, but I would give them up for Goodcents. I miss Goodcents. Whateburger is ok, nothing special.

I think Taco Beuno is one of the only decent fast food taco places and KC has those. Wish they had them here.

Need to bring white castle back to kc and dc. I would even be okay with Krystal Burger for that once every few months late night onion slider craving.

KC really does have just about everything though. Seems like KC has more of the fast food chains than most markets. I think Blue Springs alone has more fast food chains to choose from than entire counties do here. Here there is a lot more of the fast casual chains (like potbelly, qdoba etc).

I thought of another one: Taco Mayo. (Mayo like Cinque de Mayo not like Hellman's). Better than Taco Bueno, IMO. Based out of Oklahoma City, so it's not unthinkable they might someday expand here.

KC and the rest of the country aren't missing anything, for In-N-Out's popularity is a cult following and most certainly not based on the food or the service. First time I went to one I was shaking my head within 10 minutes wondering where the heck their glowing reputation came from or what it was based upon.

A cult following....not just figuratively....as bible verses are printed on some of their packaging.

I wouldn't drive out of my way for In-And-Out.

Other than Whataburger (due to constant Big 12 commercials), and maybe Braums, I can't think of anything KC desperately needs. Stroll down Johnson Drive and you have almost every chain restaurant known to man.

Braums is needed here desperately. The only reason they do not expand up this way is they are based out of Central Oklahoma and do not want their truck drivers to drive more than they can in a day's drive to get to stores. As a result they stay within this radius of Central Oklahoma and the KC area is just outside of it. I think its crazy and they should expand though when they have stores and locations in Liberal Kansas and Emporia Kansas and not Kansas City's area.. Its a cash cow they are missing out on

Including Runza, which I had no knowledge of firsthand, only the sad musings of my Nebraska-transplant coworkers until that place opened.

As for me, on temporary relocation to the Chicago area, tonight I took advantage of fast food I can't get in KC...White Castle sliders and onion rings.

It's a tradeoff, though... not fast food (necessarily, though truth be known, I'd take a taquito and a Rooster Booster over most fast food meals any day), but I desperately miss QuikTrip up here!

I had this experience when a transplanted New Yorker expected me to be impressed with Shake Shack, to the point of standing in line for mediocre burgers and fries. Um, no. You can always tell who is a native NYC-dweller (clue: they truly don't give a crap what you think or if you're impressed by them), and who is a dime store wannabe by how badly the latter wants to impress you with crap because "It's SO NYC!"
