The White Haven motel was torn down 3 or so years ago.

It is still the original building, though. Now called Splish Slash Auto Wash. Address is 8100, so you are correct.

No, it's not called Splish Splash anymore. It's something else. Maybe Turtle Wax or Turtle something. The building really is old and looks it. Not so much from the outside, but from the inside.

Did Children's Palace move?

When I lived there, it was right behind K-Mart facing 95th street. My wife worked there in the early to mid 80s.

CrownVic is right, Children's Palace was on the 95th side of K-Mart. The cafeteria was Furr's not Luby's. I liked their chicken fried steak and fried potatoes.

I may be a Clay Countian now, but I spent my formative years in NE JoCo.

It was Toys R Us for several years but has been closed for years. The building is empty.

Yes, that is correct- it was by the K-Mart. Children's Palace closed at the very end of the 80s or early 90s. I posted some Youtube links that indicated that a commercial aired for the store in 1988.

Link to pictures of the now-empty building (Children's Palace) below. I never shopped at Children's Palace. It was Toys R Us when I shopped there. Then Toys R Us closed and it became Michael's until Michael's moved.

We shopped there a lot when we moved back in '79 when our kids were small. And my wife worked there for maybe a couple of years. Those current photos are not the way it looked back then.

Back in the day, it had a front that was similar to the Englewood, Colorado store that is now a Big Lots - shown here in the photo near the bottom of this page.

Good link. That is a good representation of the scale and size of what the store was like in terms of square footage.
You would hardly recognize JOCO if you visited today.

Overland Park population growth was slower throughout most of the mid to late 70s.
Historical population
1960 21,110
1970 76,623 263.0%
1980 81,784 6.7%
1990 111,790 36.7%
2000 149,080 33.4%
2010 173,372 16.3%
Est. 2012 178,919 3.2%

Johnson County, KS as a whole:
1950 62,783 88.4%
1960 143,792 129.0%
1970 220,073 53.0%
1980 270,269 22.8%
1990 357,048 32.1%
2000 451,086 26.3%
2010 544,179 20.6%
Est. 2012 559,913 2.9%

Only a few developments were south of College Blvd. Corporate Woods era began in 1971-1972 time period right after the final pieces of 435 were completed. JOCO Quality of life was far superior with far fewer people around and far fewer highways/traffic.
