Hi All,

I am writing this post on behalf of my mother who is searching for a company that will either reface or paint her kitchen cabinets (about 22 cabinets/drawers). Apparently when she renovated her kitchen years ago, the range-hood was not connected properly and thus dirt and grim collected on her cabinets. She cleans them constantly but not the varnish is peeling off and the cabinets don't look so good. She's had a few companies come out to give estimates but have all given different advice. One company said that she could have the cabinets cleaned and painted in her color of choice and all would be good for at least 10 years. While other companies said that the paint would peel off within 3 years and that she should have them resurfaced/refaced but quoted her at least 8k to do it. However Home Depot told her that painting was a waste of money and that it would probably cost 10k to reface the cabinets, she should spend a bit more and just get new cabinets. My mom can't afford to spend 8k on cabinets, she also needs a new floor and counter top. Can anyone give their opinion/experience with painting or resurfacing and recommendations of companies to use?

I sent PM, but also wanted to say that a company that says you can't paint cabinets and expect it to last more than 3 years is full of it and they just don't want to do it. Probably because it may be pretty labor intensive to do it right vs refacing which is pretty easy because you just cover up the faces with veneer. You are just talking about a veneer refacing and not actually rebuilding the faces right? Even replacing the face frames with brand new ones would probably be cheaper than replacing the entire cabinents. But if you reface, you would probably have to buy new doors, which will be more expensive than just painting them.

Either way it could be done fairly easily and in-expensively vs replacing the cabinets. I have done both.

Here is a refacing job I had done in my KC rental property. Way cheaper than new cabinets, but much nicer (new builders grade is crap unless you spend lots of $$)
