This list shouldn't be taken too seriously but is 2013 T&L reader poll with over 40K participants. If anything it gives a good indication of outsider 'perceptions' of KC and 35 cities. KC, MSP and Chicago are the only Midwest cities they included.

KC came in very high for culture, moreso than any other category.

Here's another perception list (ranker.com) that constantly changes as you can vote real-time. Is curious to see where KC ranks on many lists...

Just for grins n giggles I checked Seattle too, #2 for coffee, really?!

So no, I didn't take the KC rankings seriously either.

It amazes me how much coffee accolade Seattle gets simply because of Starbucks. As if Starbucks could even be considered a coffee shop now-a-days. At least in the actual coffee community Kansas City gets the recognition it deserves as one of the top 5 if not 10 top coffee scenes in the country.

There's not much 'valid' about perception lists but they do give a good idea how people think about cities in their head and KC's reputation seems to be improving last several years.

Forget Starbucks. Seattle has some amazing independent coffee roasters and brewers, the best (IMO) being Espresso Vivace. Their coffee is amazing. So #2 actually makes sense.

KC is gaining some decent momentum in coffee territory but almost for the wrong reasons - sensationalized purism.

Oddly Correct in Midtown has hit top US coffee house lists but mainly because of the ego and purism - they don't allow adding cream/sugar, isn't available. Don't dare go there unless arriving on a bicycle made from spare parts. A Parisi Coffee barista (Union Station) won an international barista contest last year in Australia yet you can't get what he created - a lemongrass based thing. A new coffeehouse in Waldo is so self-deprecating that they don't like it if you openly like their coffee, yet everyone who goes there falls for it and does. Broadway Roasting did a brew I liked most but for just a week for a James Beard category restaurant dessert pairing (like wine pairing) yet they never offered it at their shop.

I'll second that, KC blows Seattlle out of the water on Italian restaurants and an actual Little Italy.

^Hmm.. well there's not much IT culture left in KC and the IT food is far below other KC ethnic eats (just a couple exceptions) so not sure what that says about Italians in Seattle. If you are referring to Columbus Park as 'Little Italy', that's almost all gone now - is more Vietnamese now - and lots of good SE Asian markets/eats in the area.
