KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Thanks to an officer with the Kansas City Police Department, an elderly woman who was without an air conditioner is now staying cool.

Officer Patrick Byrd was called to Indiana Avenue when a neighbor reported to police seeing a disoriented woman in the area. When Byrd arrived, he saw 96-year-old Helen Adams outside in the heat. He offered to take her home, but realized her house did not have a working air conditioner.

"She had a fan, but it was still very hot inside the residence," Byrd said. "At that time I asked her if she had central air or an air conditioning unit. She said the air went out a couple days ago."

Byrd called the Bishop Sullivan Center and found out that volunteers could help Adams through their Project ElderCool program.

We've had a relatively cool summer, and so it's kind of odd to have one of these heat related stories. But on that day of the 25th, I guess it did touch 99 degrees.

Everything our police officers are and should be honored for, and yet, it's for calling some volunteer center to help a lady stay cool? KCTV 5 has some of the strangest stories.

Edit:

There's seems to be a trend of police officers/departments doing the oddest things for publicity around the nation. As with a police officer who was filmed taking time to stop and play football catch with a kid, in Texas I think. It made national news. And I've seen several others like this. A cheap story IMO.

This is a nice story, but honestly, I would hope and almost expect such action from most cops on the street.

I thought the cop personally installed an AC unit or something (story is very misleading, nothing new for KCTV).

He just did what he or anybody should have done if they realized a very elderly women was baking in her house without working AC.

There are 1000s of cops in KCMO and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of them do things like this on a very regular basis. But it's good to see the press pick up one good story so they can run some brutality story in a few days without feeling guilty.
