Kcmo DC is definitely out of my price range. I'm glad you talked me out of Columbia but now you have me considering south of stl......
I appreciate all the comments and the possibilities of being a days drive from Colorado the black hills the Ozarks etc is very exciting.

Milder by winter standards such as weeks on end of snow cover.

It could happen, but more than a few weeks of consistent snow cover in KC is not common. However, if you don't like heat and humidity you will despise KC Summer weather.

But was hoping for some real nature reasonably close.I wonder if Columbia would be better but not a fan of college towns
I'm not real familiar with what is in the KC area or in Kansas, but Missouri has a bunch of great state parks for activities like hiking, camping, cycling, fishing, etc.:

Missouri State Parks

I personally think the Ozarks region in southern Missouri is the best in the state. Perhaps a bit of a distance from KC, but certainly doable for weekend trips etc.

The activity may get a reputation, in some corners, for being a "moving kegger" frat party. This is sometimes true, but by no means always true. You can have a relaxing day with your kids floating, swimming and fishing, and bump into others doing the same. Or you can go and see almost no one else the whole day. Or you can go in your street clothes when it's 60-70 degrees out. Or you can go and get wasted and party with a bunch of wild strangers. You can bring your dog. You can battle rapids in a kayak, or plop down in an inner tube and fall asleep the whole way.

It all depends on a) which river you choose, b) what day or season you go, and c) what the temperature and water levels are like on the day of your float. There are lots of guides for this in local websites and magazines, and any reputable outfitter will answer your questions and guide you to the right kind of float for you.
Awesome, thanks for the info.

It's not really my scene, but it's useful to know that it's not just the kegger-on-rafts that it was initially presented to me as.

RE: "milder" weather, It's January 26th, and I just went to the gym on foot with no coat. While walking, I passed the bank clock that noted that it was 59 degrees. I'm in tune to the temperatures this time of year, because yesterday was my birthday, and growing up in a northern state, I've always had to be careful to plan my birthday gettogethers around the likelihood of heavy snowfall. I never had slumber parties, because it was always verging on blizzard-like conditions. My family who, mostly still live in my home state and even further north, are sitting under a bunch of snow right now, whereas I ate my lunch sitting out on my porch with the dogs. It's pretty relative, but, again...January 26th, almost 60 degrees.

December was unbelievably mild but January has made up for it. Only negative wind chill a few times but the snow won't go away going on 4 weeks and looking at forecast will be at least 5 until we get a break. I don't love humidity but can deal with it

This also can happen, July 2012 as an example. The chances of this occurring in your area of Ohio is basically impossible.

The heat and humidity are far more intense there. I know as I have lived there and the Great Lakes region.
The worst heat index that I experienced (air temperature combined with humidity)was 116F in Lawrence in 2006 or 2007.

I'm a Great Lakes region transplant, myself, and I don't mind the heat or humidity in the summer in the slightest. We spent last year back in the Great Lakes, in between Chicago and Milwaukee on military orders, and my GOD. My kingdom for a nice, hot summer day. I went swimming exactly twice, and both times, gritted my teeth and froze through it. And this was July-August. Give me ALL the heat. ALL of it.
