While I've the time before the move, I'd appreciate your help on local St. Joe things I'll need. A regular doctor, orthopedic doc and a vet..the most important of all I guess. Grocery store favorite and pharmacy. My Mother worked at the bakery in the Maryville HYVEE.. do they have one in St. Joe? What library do you favor? And then I love those little thrift shops but hate to ask for your favorite as I don't want everyone to know where it is.
I'm hopeing to have one of the old homes in St. Joe but it'll have to be move in ready as I'm not the fixer upper I use to be. Just saw the beautiful Miller Mansion at 2424 Faraon finally sold and I've been watching it even though it's more than I could handle. It would cost around $300,000 here in Austin, maybe even more. That's it folks. Thanks for all you do. |

The Miller Mansion finally sold! Woohoo, I'll tell you, they've been trying to sell that house for well over a year, I think. It's a real looker, but it would be a bit too much for my wife and I to try to handle. They were asking about $165K or so for it the last time I checked.
Though we don't live in St. Joe yet, I can give you information on a few things. First, there's a terrific HyVee that just opened up a few years ago, and like many other businesses in town, it's located on the Belt Highway. I was hoping there would be a grocery store similar to Schnucks and Dierbergs that both dominate the greater St. Louis area, and this HyVee store should fit the bill pretty well. Public libraries are totally up my wheelhouse too. There are five library branches that serve St. Joseph. Four of them are part of the St. Joseph Public Library system: The St. Joseph Public Library. Of these four, the lovely Downtown Library on Felix Street was opened to the public in 1902 and has the main reference collections. The East Hills Branch just opened in I believe 2004, and the building is shared with one of the St. Joseph Visitor Centers. It has a definite 21st century look to it, and complements the three other branches very nicely. The fifth library branch is a part of the Rolling Hills Consolidated Library: Rolling Hills Consolidated Library and it is located not that far away from the East Hills Branch. This too is a very nice, more contemporary facility that has the more traditional reference desk in addition to the circulation desk which is nearer the front. On your other questions, these are ones I'll definitely want to get answers to myself. My wife and I hope to move there sometime between the end of April and early summer. Our Good Lord will let us know when the right time will be! And we're trying to get our own house here in Cali sold as well. |

I really, really, really, REALLY miss the HyVee in St. Joe...that's the best thing that happened to that place while we lived there (followed by the North Shoppes). Before HyVee came along, the best options were Wal-Hell or Food4ThoseThatDon'tLikeCleanStores.
As for docs...we were very lucky to have found Dr. Ed Kammerer...but I'm pretty sure he's full. I shadowed with him, and know many of his partners to be very good physicians. He's with Specialists of Internal Medicine. As for Orthopods, my wife worked as an OR nurse while we lived there. I'd probably go with Brett Miller... God Forbid you ever need it, but Dr.'s Weigand and Rangenini at St. Joseph Oncology are EXCELLENT, as is their newest partner. |

Thanks folks..I've put the names in my "book". Still need vet. suggestions for my little yorkie guy. I lived in St. Joe prior to Austin and my daughter lives there now. If I needed to make a living I would be looking toward Kansas City but since I don't, I'm trying to make St. Joe fit where I'll have most everything I need without bothering family to get me there as time goes on.
The S.J. job market is not good and hasn't been for a long time. This is not a good time to sell my house here but I'm looking at it as giving up one thing to get another as I have to work as long as I stay here and won't in St. Joe. I've known too many who waited wanting that money in bank and didn't or spouse didn't live to see it happen. A co-worker right now always said she wanted enough bucks in the bank before retireing so she and hubby could travel and do all they wanted without ever touching the principal. He retired, she kept working for that "Magic $" and he passed away. Now she doesn't want to travel. I've been poor and well enough and I believe you can make the best life possible with whatever you have. Have a great day! |

My in-laws use the vet on North Belt, just north of Gene Field, but I cannot remember the name of them.
We always used my aunt and uncle about 50 miles away for cheap, so I'm not much help there, sorry. |

There is also a Price Chopper there now that replaced Food4Less. I don't know how clean/good that store is tho but it's another option.

Ortho Dr: The Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center-Dr Humphreys...love him too...I broke my foot in half last year (yes, IN HALF!) and he was fantastic! Vet:Twin Pines Veterinary Clinic. We have 2 cats and did have one dog. They treated us and them like family! When we had to put our 13 year old golden down last January, it was as if we were putting down their very own! Our Max was't able to walk very well at that point, so when the day came to say our good-byes, the vet told us we could stay in our vehicle with him and do it there, so as to not make Max have to walk anymore. They were all so very kind to us and him. The gals at the desk cried right along with us! They are always so good to get us in when it is convienient to us. They just recently built a new state-of-the-art facility, which is fantastic and very pet-friendly. Grocery: Hy-Vee, of course! Pharmacy: It will totally depend on where you live. Since we moved, we changed pharmacies to the new Walgreens on North Belt, and really like them...but it will really depend on where you live. There are a LOT of pharmacies in St. Joe. Library: Sorry to admit, but I do not use the libraries. We have high-speed internet at home, so I just don't have the need. Can't help you there. Thirft Shops: There are a few in town, but I have not had too good a luck at them...but then again, I don't go often, and in order to get the goods, you have to go alot. HOWEVER, this is a GARAGE SALE kind of town...so, as soon as the winter weater breaks...the sales & signs pop up quicker than the flowers! THAT is where the deals are in this town! |

My girlfriend and I really want to get an apartment this summer. Our combined income is about $1000 a month. Is finding a place to live realistic at all, considering all the other costs involved? (food, car, etc) I've seen apartments listed for around $450 a month, but haven't looked that hard, and don't really know where to look in the first place.

![]() Honnnnnnk!!A few months ago I discovered that HyVee actually puts their weekly ads online, and when I showed it to Mrs. Northbayeric she took one look at some of the specials and told me, "We're living in the wrong part of the country!" In Santa Rosa we have some discount stores like Big Lots and Grocery Outlet, but at Grocery Outlet you have to keep an eye on the expiration dates. Having a high-speed Internet connection at home...it's hard to believe most people didn't have ANY kind of Internet access just 15 years ago! Now I can find out what a grocery store 2,000 miles away has for sale! |
