Default Visiting KC

My friend and I are driving across the country and might stop in KC for a night. I understand that Westport is a decent place to be. Any suggestions on where to stay/eat/what to see if/when we're there?

There aren't many hotels in Westport, maybe 2-3, but there's quite a few just down the road in the Country Club Plaza. There's lots of places in both areas to eat, with a very wide variety of restaurants. In Westport, Jerusalem Cafe is a good middle-eastern place, and Rudi's has great Mexican food. The Plaza is an upscale, but very popular tourist area with restaurants in just about every price range. Several of the museums are in that general part of town. The Nelson-Atkins is considered one of the top Art museums in the country, and it's open 'till 9 on weekends (I think). The Liberty Memorial and WW1 museum is definitely worth a look, also.

When are you doing this? If you're only staying for a night then I'd say the Plaza would be a good place to go. You can do everything you want in that area without doing much driving around. Westport is full of bars mostly. If you're young and like to drink then it's a good place to be and it's within walking distance of the Plaza.

If you're coming later then I would suggest you spend some time in downtown as well. Chances are there will be something going on at the arena and the Power & Light District is supposed to open sometime in the spring.

I don't stay in hotels here and really couldn't give you much detail and prices. If a really cheap hotel is what you want then you may want to abandon that area altogether and shoot up I-29 to the Howard Johnson Plaza. If you call them on the phone I think you can sometimes get a special for 35.00 a night. Zona Rosa is very close by as well as well as tons of restaurants, shopping, a couple of night clubs, slews of bars, comedy clubs, movie theaters etc... IMO it's not as cool as the Plaza and midtown but it wouldn't be a bad place to just stop for a rest and unwind if you're on a budget.

Go to the Liberty memorial. Its a 217 foot tower that has the best view of the city.
