Southwest executive addresses need for new airport terminal | The Kansas City Star

Quote:
“We worked so hard on a budget that is affordable,” he said, flanked by representatives from United, Delta, Frontier and American Airlines. “Everyone is unified on a process from the airline side.”
Quote:
"American Airlines representatives also told the council that KCI’s existing geographic layout is very constraining to them, restricting them to smaller planes, and they can’t expand their Kansas City business the way they would like."
Quote:
From another article...southwest connects passengers in STL, not here, even though it's cheaper here....which eliminates additional non-stops we could have.
Quote:
"Southwest said that’s why it’s adding flights in St. Louis, even though it’s much cheaper to fly out of Kansas City (about $7.50 per passenger vs. $15 per passenger in St. Louis)."
“Southwest purposely does not connect passengers through MCI (KCI) like we do at St. Louis,” Southwest director of airport affairs Steve Sisneros told the City Council. “We purposely throttle down MCI because the connecting experience is so bad.”
If this continues to drag out, I don't think Southwest will have much more patience and will just give up on KC and do the very bare minimum there.

Thanks Clay Chastain for coming back and reminding us what we all need...

I think this is a good idea. Instead of tearing down the existing airport, why not just add a newer/nicer terminal? There is plenty of room on the other side of the lake/reservoir. Southwest could move their flights to that terminal. A separate SW terminal works well at the STL airport.

This airport sucks and so do the residents who don't use but can vote on it. In the KC Start today, an article stated 15,000 people a day use the airport, half are from Kansas and only 1500-1700 users a day are KC residents. The one's who will vote to keep the layout as it is. Johnson County should just build a small, 20 gate terminal airport and get Southwest to move it's flights to Kansas. I would drive to Gardner to use a better terminal airport than drive to KCI.

KCI blows. What's taking so long to upgrade it.

Sounds like you're new to this topic. Unfortunately the topic has been spun round and round for years.

I recommend you actually read the article. There are no proposals to build anything across the reservoir, nor should there be. Terminal A is mothballed. The plan is to demolish it and build a new terminal in its place. But the obstacle is that too many people in Kansas City like the airport just the way it is, dammit.

This is not happening, sorry bud. No one is proposing it, and no one is willing to try and make it happen.

Try and focus.

I actually hate the airport. But I think it would be somewhat okay if they'd build a new terminal and just keep the old one. So the plan sounds like a good one!
