Janesville, WI GM workers moving looking for a house (Kansas City: to rent, home builders)

If anyone from Janesville GM plant is transfering to the Fairfax plant you are not alone!!!! We are moving our family from Evansville and need to sell two homes and two vacant properties in northern Wisconsin. Of course this will all take time and timing is the hard part of trying to find a great place to live far away from Wisconsin. I (his wife) will be coming down to help in the search of school districts and house hunting. We are looking for others that may want to rent with another GM transfer to share expenses while looking for places to buy a home. We have not gotten the transfer papers yet but know that it will be coming to the door soon. We have lived in Evansville-Janesville area our entire lives (40+ years) and have four young children so this move is not an easy thing for any of us.

First off, welcome to the KC area. I can only imagine how difficult and scary it would be to be forced to move a family and children to a city you know nothing about.

The Fairfax plant is in downtown KCK. The vast majority of KCK is lower class and poverty. There are some newer parts out by the speedway you might want to check out. The schools are decent etc out that way.

The only problems with that area is you may not have much housing to choose from and it’s just not very built up yet. It has a very rural feel to it. You may like that though.

Other areas I would look into for a good suburban home with good schools is the Northland. Clay and Platte counties where you are served by the NKC, Park Hill, Platte, and Liberty School Districts. All of which are good districts.

Fairfax is actually closer or as close to much of Clay and Platte County as western Wyandotte County.

Johnson County home prices are off the charts, but you might look into Shawnee as it’s close and offers a wider range of prices than most JoCo suburbs do. There are some very nice areas of Shawnee along 435 and K-7.

Lee’s Summit would be a pretty long haul as I think you would find something just as nice in Platte County or Shawnee and not have to waste so much gas. But you will have to check out Lee’s Summit and see if that is a community you like enough to make the drive. It is more diverse than many suburbs, but you wouldn’t have a problem in any of the suburban schools in the KC area.

Honestly, if I were in your shoes, it wouldn’t even be a discussion. I would live in the I-29 corridor of Platte County, probably near 64th Street west of I-29 in Parkville / KC, North area. It would be a perfect fit for a suburban family, tons of shopping, fast growing, middle class to upscale and very close to Fairfax and other industrial areas like the Ford plant, the Harley plant, the American Airlines Plant etc if that job didn’t pan out.

North of Kansas City is a fast growing location. The schools in Liberty are top notch. We relocated here a few years ago and chose the Liberty location for the schools and the convenience to downtown (about 15 minutes). Get a good agent who knows the area and listens to what you want in a home. We used Royce Ann Kennedy when we relocated, and we couldn’t be happier. In the price range you are seeking, be sure you look for quality work. There are a few high quality builders in the area, and then there are others which are not so quality. Don’t be fooled by the address. We have a KC address, but we are in the Liberty school district. Good Luck!

I agree. We love this area, though it sucks at the moment with the 56th Street exit closed

Look in the area from 56th street to 72nd street right off of I-29. You will find lots of nice areas at very reasonable prices. Those areas should all be Park Hill school district also which is a good district to be in.

Also, Ill state again what the above poster said. Just because it says KC MO don't discount. Most of the places you look of I-29 are going to be a KC MO address but they are all in very nice areas with very little distinction between places like Parkville (the outer parts not the old downtown), Platte Woods, Gladstone, etc..

have you got accepted to fairfax yet? we also have transfers in and have heard nothing. let me know if anyone heres of any gm plants taking anymore people all i here is they are hiring people at lower wage and filling positions with delphi trsfrs

I WOULD SAY LOOK IN GLADSTONE, LIBERTY, NORTH KANSAS CITY, INDEPENDENCE. STAY AWAY FROM KCK......ANYTHING NORTH OF THE RIVER IS BETTER THAN KCK. THE SCHOOLS STANDARDS ARE LOWER HERE IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO GET THE BEST EDUCATION I WOULD ADVISE PRIVATE SCHOOLS. AS FAR AS GM GOES IF THEY CLOSE THIS PLANT TOO YOU STILL HAVE A STRONG ECONOMY THERE'S 4 CASINOS HERE.......ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN EMAIL ME @ MISSMRSGIGI@YAHOO.COM
