My mother is downsizing from her large home. She wants a SAFE, quiet, but very upscale 2+ bedroom apartment/condo rental near to Plaza or Crown Center area so that she can walk to shopping and restaurants. Garage, good views, and W/D in unit are crucial. She can spend up to $3000 a month. At this point we are looking at rentals, but we might consider purchase if the perfect property appeared. I live in NM, and can only help her look during the short times I'm able to visit, so I need help in narrowing down options. Thank you for any help you might give!

High end urban rentals are quickly becoming extinct in KC as new construction is nearly all condo and most of the older residential towers etc have gone condo.
But she could probably still find something. She just may have to rent a condo from an owner rather than the building itself. I would try the San Francisco Tower or the Santa Fe Apartments in Crown Center. You might also try the Western Auto lofts as they seem to have rentals available in that complex even though it's condos. Downtown is probably not an option, neither is crossroads or the midtown area for on older person. The plaza has so much apartment/condo housing, I wouldn't know where to start. I would just try to find an agent or something for that area, but there are dozens of towers etc all around the plaza. Another area you might want to check out is Briarcliff which has condos near their village. Good luck. |

I lived all over the Plaza a few years ago when I relocated to Kansas City. Most of the apartments are condo now, but there are still some options.
Sunset Tower (at Roanoke & Ward Parkway) is rental. It's not high end, but management was great. A lot of young folks in the building, but great nonetheless. The same company owns/manages Churchill (on 48th). Higher end, secure building. Parkway Tower (on Wornall north of 46th). This is a great building. You can find rentals, but the majority of the building is occupied by owners. It is VERY secure (doormen) and cameras everywhere. They have a couple of restrictions, however: no pets (whatsoever, tho they do exist secretly); and no washer dryer in units - they only charge 25cents per load to make due for this. The apartments are truly your own spaces however and you can decorate and remodel as you see fit. Some have purchased 2 units on top of each other and built two story condos, etc. Overall it was a great place to live (I rented). I did not have to worry about parking there though (garage spaces sell for 10,000 cash they're in such demand). Sulgrave (49th, south of Ward parkway). Very nice. Owned units (probably many rentals in there). High end and very secure. It would be easy to spend 3,000 on rent there for a small place. Only Parkway Towers is convenient for walking to do your shopping (if you consider a small Wild Oats market sufficient for food) as there is no longer a grocery store on the Plaza itself (and Sunfresh in Westport is not the best place to walk to (uphill from the Plaza) and not the safest place to be sometimes either imho. |
