Default Westport area

Can anyone tell me about the Westport area of KC? Is it safe? Are there things to do for married people with kids? How would you compare the Westport area to the area of where Parvin and I35 meet?

It's all relative.

Westport is in the heart of a major city.

I wouldn't think twice about living there and being safe. Things happen there, but things happen in the city.

It's not a ghetto area by any stretch, it's just a busy, area in the middle of a busy city. All walks of life.

As far as kids?

Again, it's all relative.

If you are used to living in the suburban Midwest, then no way. But if you are from Chicago, or Philly or Boston then yea, you could definitely live in the area with kids.

I'm not sure what you mean by having things to do for kids though. I have kids and we go all over the metro for entertainment. I would say, we spend more time with the kids in the city than out in the burbs where there is supposed to be things to do with kids. I guess the burbs have gocart tracks and mini-golf if that's what you mean. But from what I have seen, most suburban parents don’t take there kids anywhere but little league sports, shopping and maybe an occasional Royals game.

Live where you want to live. If you want to raise a family in a good part of the city, I would applaud you for that. I know many people that do it. Most in metro KC are afraid of 75% of the suburbs, let alone the city.

The Northland is relatively safe. Things happen of course but rarely does violent crime happen like it does in the city.

I-35 and Parvin is nothing like Westport because it is a suburb. That is an area of the Northland that probably has some of the higher crime rates compared to the Northland. It seems like the closer you get to the river, the higher the crime rate is. The farther North you get, the safer it is.

Westport does not have much to do for kids. it has more for 16-30s.

It is pretty much safe, occasionally there is some violence when people leaving the bars and clubs. Lots and lots of cops patrolling westport to keep it under control.

I don't know what anyone would do with kids there.... there are no shops for them, no places to go. there are some parks around the midtown area, but thats about it...

Let me add, if you are looking to live, there are tons of nice places in westport that are perfectly safe... but just understand what also comes with it, there will be loud parties on the block, there will be some people you may think look strange. It is still very safe...

If you are looking to live it all depends on your price. The plaza is very nice too. As is Hyde Park area....

Westport is pretty diverse - both nice homes and run-down homes, both wild party scene and arty hipster scene, interesting shops and restaurants, walkable, several nice parks within walking (and definitely bike riding and/or driving) distance. It has about as much for families with children as anywhere in a given city core.

I would live in neither part...especially with kids. The lesser of two evils is probably at I-35 though. Go more north or more east.

After dark in Westport area it gets pretty bad. There are lots of homeless. There have also been shootings there lately at Sunfresh Grocery.
