We're moving from the Tampa, FL area, it has it's bad areas as well...so are any of the crime issues in KC basically the same as any other city in having "good" and "bad" areas, or is there truly a rising concern in the majority of the areas of KC in general?

Platte County, which is where KCI Airport is located is a safe area for sure. Platte County is also one of the wealthiest counties in MO in terms of median household income.

Overland Park would be pushing the 30 minute commute - especially during rush hour. I would recommend considering Shawnee/Lenexa around the 435 area 95th - Shawnee Mission Parkway area. Easy access to 435 and there usually isn't a lot of traffic going up north towards the airport - then you could cut across on 152 if you needed.
There are a lot of nice, safe neighborhoods and the Shawnee Mission School District is great. Definitely not a high crime area although crime can happen anywhere. I have lived in this area since I graduated from college in 1990 and can't remember ever feeling - unsafe.
State Taxes are higher in Kansas - something to consider so if you are working in Missouri - you will have to pay the difference to Kansas. I am pretty sure property taxes are higher in Kansas too - so I'd look into that.
That being said - the roads are usually better cared for on the Kansas side - in my opinion.

Thanks so much for the information, this will help in our research...that's one thing we were torn about, whether or not to actually look in Kansas or MO.
Thanks again

You might also look at Parkville. I have heard good things about the area and the school district.
I did live on the Missouri side for 6 months. I personally did not like living on the Missouri side - and decided I would rather pay more for taxes and rent, etc and live on the Kansas side - I love living on the Kansas side. However - part of this had a lot to do with almost all my friends, family and activities all being on the Kansas side. No doubt there are many on the Missouri side that prefer it over the Kansas side.
There are nice, safe places to live on both sides of the border. I would recommend narrowing it down to an area or two on both sides and visit both. See what feels more comfortable for you and your family.
I would recommend renting for 6 months to test out the area before buying a house once you decide. Then you can see what living in that area - day in and day out is like. What the lifestyle of the area is like and if it suits your needs.

Just moved to KCMO; living by Parkville
My family just moved to Kansas City last month. We chose to live by Parkville, still with a Kansas City address. From what I've seen, the 64151, 64152 and 64153 have pretty decent safer neighborhoods, in a great school system, and close to the airport, shopping and freeways.

Boyet - if you don't mind me asking, where did you move from (different terrain, climate compared to KC) and how do you like KC so far?
Thanks so much

Moved from Chicago, IL
Erock: We moved from Chicago last month since I took a job here in Kansas City. Chicago is a great city and has a lot to offer, compared to KC. My wife and I like the expanse and wide open areas and less traffic in KC. So far, we are enjoying our stay in KC.

I am glad you like KC. I could not live in an area that is as wide open as KC ever again, though. I can't stand the wind there in the winter
