How are the winds in those White Mountains in NH in the winter? Makes KC look awfully tame....

I think we have come to the conclusion in the past few weeks that there are only one or two safe zip in the entire metro area. Just look for those...

I'm not sure where 64329 is located, but as far as the other zipcodes, I would avoid them as a newcomer to the city.
I would also try to avoid, 66115, 66101, 66102, 66104, and the very northern part of 66106, this is basically Kansas City, Kansas east of the race track and Piper area.
In addition the North East part of KCMO; 64120, 64123, any part of 64124 that is not downtown.
As far as the question about good area with 30 min commute of the airport. Like OP said, Parkville or anything in Platte County, North Kansas City School district if you have a smaller budget, or Liberty if you want small town feel. Someone else can comfirm the 30 min commute, but I hear good things about Piper area in KCK.

I can tell you that Las Vegas "blows" KC away when it comes to wind!
We get "wind storms" that are like severe thunderstorms without rain or thunder/lightning.
KC just isn't very windy at all!

I'm a former KC resident now living in Oklahoma. Trust me, KC has NOTHING on Oklahoma when it comes to wind.

It's all according to your income...If you make a good living ($70,000+ a year) then Overland Park and The Plaza in KC aren't going to be bad areas to move. If you make lower money, I like the 64055, 64957, 64012, 64063 areas in the metro areas. If you're asking about actual 'in' city, I can't actually give informed advice, since I've never lived in the Kansas City city limits, only in towns 'small' cities surrounding it, such as Independence, Belton and Lee's Summit.
As far as the crime rate goes, I'd say KC and the metro areas have a lot of crime rate, but NYC and parts of NJ are way ahead of us, at least.

As far as the wind, it depends on what part of the city you live in. I have always been amazed at how windy it is over by the speedway. Every time we go out there, it's just a constant wind when we just came from an area where there was no wind. Over in the Lee's Summit and Blue Springs area, it's never windy (out of the ordinary) unless a front is moving through or something. Downtown is more mixed.

The best advice is to go to one of the web sites that has a map locator and put in city and zip and it will show the small areas via satelite. bing is a good one and so is google maps. Platte city is by the airport and so is Gladstone, weatherby lake, Parkville are just some areas to check. good areas good schools. Liberty and Kearney are about 20 min from the airport. I really like all these areas that I have mentioned.
