You probably heard about The Beast and the smaller The Edge of Hell. Yes, it's worth the trip.

I second the above poster. The haunted houses in KC are fantastic. I haven't been to one that compares since I moved away. Definitely visit!

To add to what's been posted, I think the best part of the those haunted houses are the street performers. They have quirky, yet really good actors that roam the streets. The haunted houses are within a few blocks of each other as well, so they are easily accessible.

Best in the country. It was because we let our city rot for 30 years. KC had entire areas of the city that were just full of vacant buildings. Perfect location for haunted houses, pefect buildings. No other big city was in such shape to have haunted houses in the middle of downtown.
The downtown houses are gone now as the downtown area now has functioning buildings in most areas.
But there are still a handfull in the west bottoms and they are some of the best, if not the best, urban haunted houses in the country.

We have several, large haunted houses like the above posters said.
I would recommend taking a trip and hitting them all up although it will be costly. I cost about 10-15 per haunted house. But it is definately worth it, especially if you havent been before.
If you are of age, I would recommend going for drinks prior to. It makes the experience all that much for entertaining.

The production company that does The Beast and The Edge of Hell opened two new attractions this year in the same few blocks. They're both non-profit and raise money for a children's charity, and one is called The Chambers of Edgar Allen Poe, and the other is Macabre Cinema. My boyfriend and I went to both tonight, and they were well worth it - the Cinema, in particular, is pretty great - it's full of the "greatest hits" of horror films both classic and contemporary. I got chased by Jack Nicholson's character from The Shining and Pinhead from Hellraiser, got lost for a good 15 minutes in "The Mist," and got pretty freaked out by Hannibal Lecter, Regan from The Exorcist, Leatherface, Jason and Freddy, a mummy, and even Frankenstein.
