Where do you live now? What are you used to?
The east side of KCMO can get down right dangerous.
But there are a few pockets of well kept neighborhoods.
There is an area directly southeast of the USPS that is almost like a suburban neighborhood lost in the city. You might look into that area (between Cleveland and Jackson).
But I would look either into some of the newer apartments in the 18th & Vine / Beacon Hill area or the Old Northeast area.
My brother lived in the vine street lofts at 22nd and Vine, a new apartment building in the Beacon Hill area and they really liked it. They moved to house recently. There are quite a few apartments in that area, but I think they tend to stay pretty full and many are income controlled, so I don't know how much you make.
Old NE is a very urban area with a lot of urban activity, but by far and large, it's a safe, diverse area with a lot of apartment options in some pretty neat and charming areas that are walkable and have lots of transit options.
You would also be close to grocery stores, restaurants and downtown/crown center. Just be careful in this area, it's a large area, but south of Independence Ave is loaded with section 8 housing and those areas can get rough.
I wouldn't go east. There just is not much east of the USPS, it's all pretty much ghetto as it turns industrial and western Independence is kind of far and isn't any better than Old NE, 18th and Vine etc.
Hope that helps.
