Default Greeting Missouri Residents - KC, MO area; working in Fairfax, KS

Hello everyone,

I found this site and decided to try to obtain some information about Missouri. I will be relocating to Missouri in the next month. I am transferring there and will be working for General Motors Corp. in Fairfax, Kansas.

Can anyone here help me out with areas to live in that are close to the factory?

I have two children, ages 9 and 11, so school choices are very important to me. I would prefer to live in a community outside of Kansas City, something smaller but that will have shopping centers comparable to bigger cities.

Any information on anything "Missouri" would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all very much, and thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Boy, I wish I could help you out there, but the way things are going with GM, I'm lucky to have a job there.

My plant closed and I have to relocate somewhere and Missouri sounds like a great place.

Yeah I saw today that they are going to lay off 1600 more workers? You should feel real fortunate! Where were you working at?

I'm sorry, but I don't know much about the K.C. area. Except going through on I-70 towards Colorado, I've not spent any time there. Except of course for Cabela's!

Missouri is a great state for sure. Good luck to you and your family!

I'm from Wisconsin. I've worked for GM for 23 years here.

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

Look north of the river. Liberty and Park Hill School Districts are good. A friend of ours just retired from GM in Fairfax after 37 years. Anyone in the auto business are holding their breaths right now. DH works for a dealer and their business is so bad. He is a mechanic and usually when people aren't buying cars they get what they have fixed, they aren't even doing that right now. I think you will really like living in Missouri!

I would also look north. Platte County, MO.

But if you search Fairfax in the KC forums, you will see many have already asked this very question. That plant must be moving a ton of people to KC. Does this mean that locals are being laid off to make room for people that have worked for GM longer?

No locals will be laid off. We are filling open spots from when people retired or took the buyout. We could not transfer there until all laid off people there were called back. Any open slots after that are what we are filling up. If those slots don't get filled, then GM will hire off the street there.
