Might look on up I-35 to Lathrop MO. Small town, but not alot of commercial businesses. Grocery store, pizza joint, gas, subway, post office, bank, and Dollar general. Not much else, but it's quiet and close to I-35, but not on I-35

This may be too far from the KC area for you, but you may want to check out Rocheport. It's a really nice little quaint town, and right on the Katy Trail. It's also less than 10 minutes from Columbia.

Rochport is awesome. Never thought about living there, but it's a neat town and the KATY trail in that area amazing.

Neighboring Plattsburg would also be worth checking out.

Parkville is awesome, although its more of a tiny college-town vibe than maybe a rural small-town vibe.

Take a drive to Liberty and check out the downtown area. I grew up in Liberty and it has maintained its small town feel while still having all the conviences of a suburb. Plus it is a short drive 18-25 minutes to downtown Kansas City. It is also close, once 291 opens back up, to Independence. I suggest you look in the area between the William Jewel Collge and the Junior Highschool. You can walk the entire area and you will have small shops and resturants within walking distance.

I like Lexington and Higginsville. Friendly people with easy access to Kansas City, and prices are within reason.
