downtown Lee's Summit - new and wanting to start meeting people - advice??
So after months of researching (major props to City-Data) and after a visit to the KC area, I have finally made the plunge and am moving to downtown Lee's Summit, MO, by the end of this month.
So what advice would you give to a mid-late 20s, work-at-home guy like me who likes being active and gets along with just about everybody?
The local music scene looks good, there's 3 bars within walking distance of downtown LS, plenty of outdoor attractions, etc. So how should I start meeting people?
Can anybody recommend a social club for young professionals? Or perhaps a local volunteer organization active in the community?
Any advice would be great! Lee's Summit feels like such a great place to live and I'm ready to start my 'new' life!

Congrats.
I would look into community sports. There are lots of active sports in Lee's Summit, sand volleyball, kickball, roller hockey, softball etc.
I'm sure you will get to know people just hanging out in the downtown area at coffee houses etc.
I would just go over to the Legacy Park community center and see if what types of events might be listed or other people looking for similar connections.
Downtown LS has a very active community organization, that would probably be the best place to start. Just get involved with them.

KCMO, thank you for the response. Your postings are familiar and helpful, and I'm sure you have in some way helped influence my decision to visit, and then, move to Lee's Summit

My SO and I will be closing shortly on a home just off the downtown area of LS...we are city dwellers (he and I both) and very rural dwellers (me, earlier in life) from way back, and this will be our first foray into a suburban setting...Lee's Summit was never on our radar, but we fell in love with the vintage house and the atmosphere of the downtown appealed to us in a way that no other suburban locations ever really did, so we took a step we didn't necessarily anticipate taking, i.e. moving out of the city.
We are early thirties, and will be looking for much of the same you describe...civic opportunities, social meetups, ways to be out and active, fun/low key bar options that don't have to be hip, as we're not particularly hip, etc. Going back and forth with all the various phases of the home-buying process, I've already decided that I enjoy the coffee shops, etc. Just looking to enjoy what seems to be a nice, mellow, charming community there in the downtown area.

Same thing happened to us TabulaRasa. Blue Springs was originally our top choice but we "fell in love" with the downtown Lee's Summit atmosphere and the place that we were moving into.
Now that I'm here I'm a regular of the various restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. It's just a a really cool place to live and hangout.
I've thought about starting a Lee's Summit happy hour, or a Lee's Summit young professionals social club... that is a decent sized commitment though to get something like that running.
KCMO mentioned some good opportunities worth trying out.

Not sure about the social scene in Lee's Summit, but a great resturant if you like Soulfood is PeachTree off Chipman Rd. They have the best fried catfish and best fried chicken in town. also great peach cobbler!

What about the Jumpin Catfish, or something like that name? My neighbors were telling me about all-you-can-eat crab there on certain nights. Now THAT sounds great!

"Soulfood is PeachTree off Chipman Rd" LOL, You wouldn't believe how many different roads there are in Atlanta named Peach Tree. Let me get moved and settled in and I'll make all "ya'll" some good ol'southern meals!
Good luck Mrkush with your move!
