I hate that it's an awesome city with wonderful amenities and fantastic cultural offerings, all with a bargain cost of living that gets a miserable rep thanks to a pervasive thug life mentality in a significant chunk of the urban core.
All urban areas have this to an extent, but I used to live in Chicago, and I never witnessed such a high percentage of people from that suburban metro area who were so seriously afraid to enter the city itself as I do in KC's surrounding metro.

The Kansas City school board. What a disgrace!

When I lived there I disliked the heat, humidity, out of control suburban sprawl, blight in KC, MO, the bad drivers combined with road rage, and the lack of natural lakes.

The school district, the negative conservative (not politically, but I mean lack of dynamic action) attitude that sweeps much of the metro, the awful catering to automobiles, the lack of good public transit, and the terrible sports teams.

people keep saying that KC has a good cost of living, no it doesn't. The housing is overpriced and the taxes are outragous.

Some areas yes, but most of the metro is pretty affordable. Especially when you factor in food, utilities, etc. Those are lower here than in many other metro areas too.

The housing is overpriced when you factor in the very high property taxes and a typically smaller lot size. I moved to NH and we don't have an income tax or sales tax. My property taxes are only somewhat higher, and I have quadruple the amount of acerage.

Statistics would disagree with you. Have you ever looked at housing in other parts of the country? Houses are way more expensive in most of the country compared to here.
