90% of the MO side is redneck? Samantha, YOU Loose credibility when you say things like that.
First off, hope you are not including urban KCMO and if you want to say MO side, um, the KS side is even worse because what is the KS side outside of JoCo? Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Miami counties? Talk about redneck. Not to mention Olathe and don’t kid yourself, western JoCo is very similar to eastern Jackson County. All of JoCo is not like southern OP/Leawood.
Both sides have their fare share for blue collarish type people.
For crying out loud, you live in Kansas, not Connecticut. Kansas calling Missouri redneck is like Detroit calling south central LA "ghetto".
I don't know about what Samantha said on the 'redneck' situation. I've seen a large number of 'Rush is Right!' bumper stickers, or some variation of the idea in Johnson County. That's pretty 'redneck' to me. The rednecks in JoCo may just be more of the white-collar variety rather than being blue-collar rednecks. Politically, JoCo is one of the most conservative in the KC area, Dennis Moore (US Rep, and conservative Dem) notwithstanding.
No doubt that Platte County has plenty as well, I'm just saying they're not AT ALL exclusive to one area of KC. You will be in the Midwest, you know! LOL!
Personally, 90% of the MO side is too redneck for me, even Platte County (sorry). But that's just me. I grew up in a small KS town. Some of my best friends and family are rednecks But I like living where I do in JoCo sooooo much more.
That is one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen on this board and that is saying a lot if you ever go into the political forum.
I have lived my entire life in the Clay/Platte area.
90% of it is not redneck or even close to it. If you go out of the suburbs and into the country, it is. But, the greater metro area on the Missouri side is not redneck.
In fact, I would consider JoCo far more conservative/redneck than the Missouri side. People in JoCo are usually just rednecks that have money. JoCo is far more conservative than the Missouri side of the city. All you have to do is look at voting records to see that.
Have you ever lived on the Missouri side or worked over here?
I work in JoCo and people on the Missouri side are much kinder and far more tolerant of people in general.
^ OMG, SO TRUE. I never thought of it that way. White collar rednecks? That is so true.
Regardless, This is the midwest. KC in general has a very rural culture, especially in the burbs (not so much in the urban core of KCMO). You can hide behind the 400k homes and the perfectly manicured lawns in South JoCo (or South Platte) all you want. It's the Midwest. That's why KC has TWO bass pro shops AND a cabellas and no IKEA or Trader Joes.
As an "urban" type person that gets out of KC, I have always found it hilarious when Kansas people talk down Missouri like it's some sort of redneck place when Kansas is one of the most rural and conservative states in the nation with almost no culture or entertainment options (all in KCMO) and KS has ONE county they claim as the face of the state, even thought that ONE county is nothing more than a suburb of Kansas City, MISSOURI. Can you imagine if St Charles County, MO was the entire image of Missouri? God, who would want that?
On a national scale, Kansas is a joke. Seriously. The school board, the rural/wizard of oz image. Everything. Kansas is what gives KCMO a bad image. Not the other way around. People can't imagine an urban metropolitan city could possibly be in Kansas. They are right. Because it's in Missouri. When I'm on the east coast, I have to clarify that schools on the MO side of KC are not pushing religion in public school curriculums. That's a "KS" side issue. Sure, it's gone for now, but believe me, outside of KS, it's still well known. That made major national news and all the stand up comedians have used it liberally.
You never get asked about farms or tornados or Dorothy when you say you are from Missouri. You are asked what part of Missouri, St Louis?
I swear, JoCo people seriously think they live in gods country. I have never seen anything like it.
Bottom line is there are a lot of very nice, very upscale areas on the MO side in the city and the suburbs and it's spread across a three county area. There are a lot of very nice, very upscale areas on the KS side (nothing urban) and it's spread across one county. Both sides of the city have a blue collar element. I would say per capita, KS has more. My god, it's the primary reason I avoid the entire village west area (which is always swarming with JoCo people sporting tacky college sports paraphernalia). That is the most redneck themed shopping district I have ever seen. You can even go to the Ag hall of fame while out there. That along with a massive furniture store, a hunting store and nascar track are the top tourist attractions in Kansas.
90% of it is not redneck or even close to it. If you go out of the suburbs and into the country, it is. But, the greater metro area on the Missouri side is not redneck.
Um, remember those "white collar rednecks you were talking about?"
I said 90% of MO was too redneck for me. Mo just has a different "feel" to it. Again this is just my opinion. I've never lived in MO (and likely never will) but have worked all over the metro and various areas of both states for almost 20 years.
It's also true that the same or a greater percentage of KS is too redneck for me. I got the hell out of Western KS as quickly as I could. I like the area of JoCo that I live in, but I agree, it's not Connecticut.
Some days I'd like to leave the midwest altogether. But home is home, and I do like more things about where I live than I dislike. So for now, we stay.

kcmo, YOU are the only person I've ever met who claims that JoCo is the "face of the state". Everyone here knows you hate KS, but at least insult it with facts as opposed to your micro-narrow viewpoint.
JoCo is an anomaly in Kansas. Most of the state is quite rural, quite redneck and darn proud of it!
I'm proud of the heritage and rural culture too, I just don't like living next to people who are making their own ammunition for their stockpile of weapons as they await the downfall of the world under "Obama the anti-Christ." Which is why I also won't live in 90+% of Kansas!
Yes, I said "rural culture". Which is "culture" even if not everyone appreciates it.

Why on earth would you? Dorothy was from KS. And since it's a part of the culture, it doesn't bother me at all that it's part of the "image".

Yes, yes we do.
But so do people from just about every other part of the world, including Missouri!

I agree

I agree with you about the VW area. I don't enjoy going there either. Geez, it feels like Missouri for pete's sake!!

Every time you say this, it sounds just as ridiculous. There are several threads here and plenty of info about KS tourism. You may not be interested in what KS offers, but NO ONE BUT YOU claims that Nebraska Furniture Mart is a tourist attraction.
Now Nascar and hunting opportunities are tourist attractions. Does that make KS redneck? Yep, but we already established that.
Now there are many suburbs on the MO side that can be pretty neck. Cass County, Independence, parts of Blue Springs, parts of Clay County etc.
I appreciate that honesty! It's important to have an unbiased viewpoint from those that live in the area in order to make an informed decision on where to locate within the city.

EDIT. Riverside, MO in Platte can be a bit redneck. OK. It can be pretty redeneck. . But even Riverside is changing into more of a typical suburb as more houses go up there. Even some of the Briarcliff Development is actually in Riverside now. But the old part of Riverside is pretty redneck. I have always avoided Riverside. Not my thing. I think everybody should go to RED X once before they die!
Oh Lord! Definitely sounds like a place I'd wanna stear clear of!!! LOL!

Sounds like she's already done that.
Did it, done it and lived to tell about it! LOL!

To each his own. As I said, there are many pluses to a "good ol' boy" lifestyle, I'm not putting it down. I can "hey y'all" with the best of them!
One of the great things about KC is that you can find the whole spectrum here.
I can "hey y'all" with the best of 'em too at this point in my life...I had to learn that little "technique of etiquette" though when I moved here. After 20 years, it comes a tad easier.

Your husband may be more comfortable in Platte County for "office political" reasons.
It would probably be a good idea to find out where most of his potential colleagues live. There is a palpable (if you can't already tell ) animosity between JoCo and the MO side of KC and it most certainly filters into the workplace especially those that are centrally located. If he'll be dealing with that, it's something to be prepared for.
That's an interesting point to consider! But...we wanna be happy where we live...not live somewhere to please others. Ya know?

I have no problem with blue collar people! They work hard for their money and do honest work! To me, redneck is more than white collar vs. blue collar...it's uneducated and backward mentalities.

What animosity?
LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! So...I'm picking up that perhaps some of the animosity is good natured and some of it hateful? Is that correct?

Oh Lord! Have I mentioned that my husband and I are liberal Democrats? And by the way...Rush is WRONG...and an idiot to boot!

Oh my God!!! Ding, ding, ding!!! You're pressing hot buttons with me on this one! From what you just said, you could be speaking about a lot of Tennessee! I detest that part as well! Sheesh...some of these folks are freakin' nuts touting the Apocalypse and so forth.
And another thing about Tennessee that has grated on my nerves over the years is that we're smack dab in the middle of the Bible belt, yet there are so many "Christians" who act "non-Christian" in their every day life! Hypocrisy on that front is astounding and blatant!
Samantha, I think we are more alike than we think. Only I lean more toward an urban envirnoment and you more toward a suburban. I think we both just want "high quality".
I am leaving the midwest this fall though. I have been ready to leave the midwest for a long time. It would be a great place to return to when I'm ready to settle down, maybe in my 60's?
When I say redneck, in KC it's mostly blue collar. You won't find too much of the true redneck culture in KC, confederate waving toothless overall wearing people. You will see a lot more of that down south of St Louis and south of Springfield.
I'm from the "city". So a person driving a big 4x4 pick-up, even a nice one, is a redneck in my book, especially if they have nascar stickers on the windows and a testical sack hanging off the back. Even that is rare. There are over 2 million people in KC, you are bound to see some people like that, but it's not near a bad here as this thread sounds.
I have spent a lot of time in TN and they have some serious hillbilly rednecks. Like southern Missouri does. wow. Coming from anyplace in the south, Platte County is nowhere near being a redneck place. It's not even blue collar, it's mostly white collar.
KC just has a lot of good ol boys and their pick up trucks and john deer hats. You know, construction workers etc. and some areas of the metro have more of that blue collar crowd like Cass County and Blue Springs than others. Most live in nice homes etc. Just country people living in the metro.
White collar rednecks. That absolutely made my day.
I have ever seen any "Rush is right" bumper stickers in the area so I'm not sure how common they are.
It might be a new thing?

That's encouraging!

I had to laugh out loud when I read the above comments! You see...my husband drives a Chevy Silverado truck and we have a really nice John Deere lawn mower that is made for taking care of a lot of land. (No testicle sack, or gun rack though!) LOL!
When we first moved to Tennessee from Cincinnati, we came to a 5 acre piece of property owning a Ford, Thunderbird and a Chevy Corsica...with those vehicles we were totally and completely unprepared to maintain 5 acres of land. Over the years we've acquired the vehicles necessary for the lifestyle we'd chosen. If you have land...a pickup truck is a necessity...not a political statement.
My car is a Chevy Tahoe and the hubby has a 2007 Harley Davidison Heritage Classic for fun stuff when we have time.
So...by your definition, we may be initially considered Rednecks when we arrive in the area!!! LOL!

Yes they do! They also have some very fine people as well...but ya have to look for them a bit harder!

That's encouraging as well! The one thing I keep thinking about is that when we lived in Cincinnati, we had the yuppie, suburban type lifestyle...here in Tennessee we have a rural type lifestyle. Honestly there are things about both that I enjoy and things about both that bother me. For instance...in the yuppie suburban area we lived in Cincinnati, traffic was always a nightmare. But the shopping and progressive attitudes were great and something I missed after I moved here.
In the rural type environment of Tennessee...it is beautiful albeit backwards! The lay of the land and my yard in particular are something I will miss if I move back to a yuppie, suburban, busy setting. Right now where we live, we can skinny dip in the pool any time of the day without concern from the neighbors. The nature that abounds is spiritual in a way...peaceful and calming. Our yard is like a private park, though it takes a lot of work to maintain it that way!
It would be ideal to find a happy medium between the two.
