Hmmm gotta say, I can't think of a single time talking with people I've worked with on the MO side who are from KS and us ever trashing KS.... to be quite honest... most people I know on the MO side don't talk about KS period, unless its someone with KS plate driving poorly downtown LOL. We honestly don't discuss KS, it doesn't matter to us...
on the flip side, my experience working in KS, the MO side comes up all the time and is trashed talked...
But sorry for you Samantha if you come to MO side and everyone in MO is telling you KS is crap =(
I don't think it's crap, just not my style... and yes boring, but as boring as any other typical suburb in the US, and it has its merits for people wanting to raise a family and have suburban needs... just the same as the MO burbs too.

The area around Metro North is not depressed. The mall itself if empty but the main reason is that it is the choice of the owner. If they keep a certain percentage of the mall empty, they get a tax break. That mall is not a priority for the company that owns it. Several offers have been made to buy it and redevelop but they keep falling through.
Indoor malls are a thing of the past and outdoor shopping districts are taking it's place.
A friend of mine owns a store in there and the plan right now is to renovate but that could change.
I would not say the Northland is in transition. I would say that it is growing.
That mall may be empty but right across the street in one direction is a Best Buy and a Toys R Us. In the other direction is a Price Chopper and a K-Mart. In the other direction is a Target, Kohl's, Michael's, Babies R Us, and a couple of strip malls. If you go 7-8 minutes north or south you will find everything you could ever want in terms of shopping.
In regards to safety, I leave my cars unlocked pretty much all the time. I leave my house unlocked a lot and leave things sitting right in front of my house and have never had a single think stolen. I run in the middle of the night all the time as well as does my wife.
My brother lives 5 minutes from the airport and you rarely hear a plane so noise isnt an issue. Trains are much louder than planes are in Kansas City.
The main difference you will find in the counties is the school districts. Clay county is mainly North Kansas City with a portion going to Liberty. Platte is mainly Park Hill unless you are in Platte City and they have their own school district.

Thanks you guys! That's really informative stuff!
My personal theory about indoor malls going obsolete is that they banned smoking in all the malls. It's no longer convenient for smokers to shop there, so the lifestyle centers are taking over cause folks can grab a smoke between stores. Just my opinion of course.
I'm picking up on the animosity between the two states by reading this thread! Sheesh! I thought at first some of this back and forth was in jest and good spirits, but it sounds as if these negative feelings towards the other state go pretty deep!
I'm with you Samantha...anything that goes that freakin' deep probably goes back to the Civil War! Living in Tennessee, I've seen that mentality before only towards us "yankees" who are from elsewhere.
I'm really not into hostility! Bums me out totally! It's actually pretty sad that the two states don't have a better relationship, seeing as y'all are neighbors!

Agreed, but if you're into history, read about the KS/MO feuds from way back when. Interesting stuff!
You put that alongside the human tendency to be defensive and territorial about "home" in general, and it just snowballs!
People are drawn to define themselves in groups. There are the occasional loners of course, but people are social animals by nature. So we create all these social groupings: "Us"'s and "Them"'s if you will.
And if you ain't one of " us" then you must be one of " them"! And we don't like " them", they're different than " us"!
We do it all the time. We divide ourselves by state lines, county lines, political lines, religious lines, racial lines, cultural lines, money lines, and on and on and on ....
What a waste of time ... not to mention a knee-jerk reaction that perpetuates hostility and animosity.
Sorry ... didn't mean to wax on philosophically ... I must get some work done today!

You're right! We do it to define ourselves and others. Language breaks down at some point though cause all the definitions we place on ourselves and others really doesn't define the complete person. Language waxes inferior in that regard.

Agreed. And I shouldn't have bothered to get so irritated about it yesterday. But it is so frustrating when people are SO wrapped up in this that they can't see that they are doing exactly the same thing as the people they accuse!
kcmo and others have said over and over that the friction between MO and JoCo is entirely the fault of JoCo because of the ["way you guys are".] That attitude gets to me sometimes.
None so blind as those who refuse to see ...

The general arrogance and ignorance of people out there toward the MO side (and areas outside of JoCo in general, including the rest of kansas) will be one of the main reasons. I guarantee it.
Think about it….

Then why don't they just work in Missouri?
I think your talk here is more about YOUR attitudes that your neighbors'. You obviously greatly dislike Johnson County. It really bothers you when others LIKE Johnson County. I prefer Johnson County over any county in the Kansas City metro. And I prefer Kansas over Missouri. Doesn't mean I'm a snob, it just means I am not YOU and what YOU like obviously isn't what I like.

And you think those of us who are in Johnson County don't get PMs telling us we are right? I've gotten a few from MISSOURI people saying I was right, and one from a Missouri person saying "LOL, you're making kcmo so mad he's about to have a stroke."
And you don't think Missouri people ask us why we live in Johnson County? You think they don't tell us why they could never live in Johnson County, how their schools are as good as Johnson Countys? You don't think my Franklin, Miami and Linn County family don't give me a hard time about living in Johnson County? I like it here. That's why I live here. I went to Shawnee Mission schools and I decided long before I ever had kids that I was raising my kids in Johnson County. I have done that and I'm glad I did. I like the schools, I like the area, I like the low crime, I like that people take care of their property, I like that I live in an area where my property value has not declined even when it has in other areas. I like that my house is worth three times what I paid for it.
I don't really care if you (kcmo) or your neighbors or anyone else likes Johnson County or not. I like it and that's why I'm here. Missouri is not my cup of tea. Wyandotte County is not my cup of tea. Urban living is not my cup of tea. Country living is not my cup of tea. Johnson County fits me just right.

Just got done playing basketball with one of my neighbors. You won't believe this, but he actually brought up what we are talking about. My son asked him if he likes MU or KU and he said MU. Not because he likes MU, but because he doesn't like Kansas.
He has only lived in KC for 8 years. He is from Charlotte. He worked for sprint for a while and now he is just in the army reserve so he goes to some fort in KS all the time now.
Basically I asked him why he thought that because of this forum (and he has no idea that I don't care for the area). He summed it up with one word. "unpleasant" but he said a lot more. Basically he said that KS people give MO people a hard time and it's not all fun. They are just mean. I begged him to send me an email and if he does, I will post it.
This is from a person that is new to the area.
He started kind of getting wound a bit and putting down Kansas “what’s in Kansas” there is nothing there, why are they so arrogant? So I jumped in and we had fun with it. My son said they have the tbones!
You don't have to believe one single word of what I just typed. But you should because this is quite common. I'm sure the people that have rubbed him the wrong way are fine and very nice people.
Luzianne, don’t flatter yourself, you don’t make me mad. I simply post things how I see them and others do the same. I think people from JoCo can be extremely arrogant and ignorant of the metro and I think JoCo leaches off the MO side for everything from economic development to culture while disrespecting the MO side at the same time.
You don’t.
Lots of other people think the same thing as I do. Lots don’t.
That’s fine.
It is what it is

Hmmm. And here you are always saying KU fans are OBSESSED with college sports/basketball and Missouri fans don't even talk about it. And here your own son is bringing up the subject. Interesting. Cause usually kids pick up what they see their parents doing. But you say you don't. Hmmm.
kcmo, I didn't flatter myself - I guess if that's "flattery" then it came from one of your fellow Missourians, not from myself.
