Eastern Arkansas has LOTS of native pines... and it's a very warm climate.

Whoops, I was referring to white pine.
White Pine is common throughout the Appalachians and Upper Midwest.
I know Pitch Pine, Slash Pine, and Loblolly Pine are common in the South.

Yeah, I know, I grew up rurally and rode buses for a decade of schooling myself. I lived further north than KC, and we still rarely had snow days. What's deemed "not safe" to run is pretty subjective and varies wildly district to district. I guess my point was that many/most districts do run with some ice and snow present, and I'm often amazed by what's deemed worthy of calling a cancellation.
I also work for a private school whose students are referrals from various districts from the metro area and beyond. So the real reason we get closed is because if even ONE of our feeder schools' communities, be it Jamesport, Harrisonville, or KCMO, calls school off, we call it off.

I grew up in St. Joseph, north of KC, and we seldom had snow days off from school.
They have more now than then but still not as many as my kids living in southern Missouri do.
Part of the reason is how the roads are handled in winter weather; here they do very little and they have a lot of back rural roads to cover with buses so they shut down rather than take a chance.

Is anyone having really terrible allergies this fall? I haven't had bad allergies in over a decade, and they hit me really bad last week. My wife is in agony and my kid is congested (could be the flu though). My realtor has really bad allergies, his kid has bad allergies, my sister has really bad allergies, and two guys on my softball team have bad allergies. What gives?
