Default Kansas City metro area size

I know that the population of the metro is around 2.0 - 2.1 million currently and growing at a moderate rate. However, given the area's extensive suburban sprawl and highway network, it sometimes feels larger than that (especially during weekdays). The area feels more like a 2.5 - 3.0 million metro (according to my subjective opinion).

What does everyone else think? Does the metro area "feel" larger than its Census Bureau estimate would indicate?

I don't know that it feels any larger than it is. On the other hand, it doesn't really feel smaller than St. Louis, which is around 3 million now, I think. The only difference you notice visibly, is that the freeways over there have an extra lane or two.

It feels spread out - not necessarily large, but spread out, to me (I've always lived in more compact metros when I've lived in cities). But because the traffic is overall so minor, it always amazes me the speed with which I can get from one far-flung area of the metro to the next. Also a difference from more dense cities.

Kansas City is one of the most spread our metropolitan areas in the country. In fact, I think we are third behind Oklahoma City and Jacksonville, FL.
