It's not juvenile. It's human nature. People are competitive and people grow up rooting for their university. It is usually passed down from generations and it is ingrained into people from early childhood.

Sorry, I disagree.

As far as I'm concerned, not only is it juvenile, there are precious few things which can rival it for the dubious honor of being the 'most' juvenile of adult behaviors.

kcmo is a jewel in the roughkcmo is a jewel in the roughkcmo is a jewel in the roughkcmo is a jewel in the roughkcmo is a jewel in the roughkcmo is a jewel in the rough
Every other car on the road in MD or VA does NOT have a college label of some sort on it. I would say it's more like 1 out of every 500 cars I see on the road. As soon as I enter the parking garage at KCI, the first three Kansas cars I see, 2 of them will have a KU jayhawk on them. It's just dumb. That's my opinon anyway. And the bistate thing in KC is much more than just the KU/MU rivalry. I would even say the stupid KU/MU thing is probably one of the least biggest issues (other than the "KU is in your face 24/7" thing which is more of an annoying pet peeve of mine since I have little iterest in college sports). The things that bug me the most are the lack of respect so many kansans have toward the MO side and how the region functions economically where KS will do anything to grow, even though 90% of the time it's at the expense of KCMO. I love the central portion of KCMO. It's a wonderfull city that is very underated on a national scale and I will miss not living there. I will also miss the general KC area on both sides of the state line and some of the MO side suburbs and their lakes, downtowns etc. I will not miss how the area interacts with itself and how the area is almost at war with itself to such a degree that it will never be able to take itself to the next level. (which many posters have stated they are fine that "we don't want to be like Denver"...). If the KC area ever got its act together, it could be one of the top cities in the nation. I truly believe that. Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties have got to team up and get creative and find ways to compete with JoCo and hang on to what they have and even get back some of what they lost and then concentrate on growing the area without the KS side so something will get done. Transit, arts, zoo, etc are so underfunded in KC. It's time time for the MO side to step up and show Jeff City its power, show Washington DC they are tired of being ignored and show JoCo that they will no longer be their personal grab bag for businesses and that they will no longer condisider JoCo residents prized ticket buyers and start finding ways to charge more to non Jackson/Clay/Platte residents that live in metro KC to use anything that is subsidized by MO residents be it city, county or state money. KS is welcome to do the same if that's what it takes to free up money for basic infrastructure, schools, police etc. I just want KC to be the city it could be. That's all I have ever wanted.

Yeah, whatever goes on between MU/KU amounts to absolutely nothing compared the insanity of the SEC, where every school is a complete arch-rival with every other school. Of course, you still have the Florida-Georgia, Alabama-Auburn rivalries, which are on another planetary level. They don't allow you to live in Alabama without choosing a side.... don't think for a moment that I'm exaggerating. Seriously.

It's dumb that people want to show pride for their local university? How is that dumb? You may not care for it because you dont follow college sports but calling it dumb is childish.

I would also be willing to bet that if you went into Maryland and Virginia, you would find lots of cars that have Maryland Terrapin and Virginia Cavaliers stuff on it. Those are two large universities that have a big following.

College sports is huge in the United States. So, please dont make a post that infers that KC or more specifically the Kansas side makes a big deal out of something that isnt a big deal in other parts of the country. You know very well that is not true.

I think the KU/MU rivalry is on par with any other large rivalry in college sports. It is just that since we are in the midwest, it is not hyped up by the national media. I work with a couple of people that grew up in Florida, Georgia, and other SEC areas and they have indicated that the KU/MU rivalry is just as intense as anythng that goes on down there. They just did not know about it because the national media never says anything about it. But, that is probably due to the fact that MU never does anything worth national recognition.

^Yeah, the two schools don't always enjoy success at the same time. Still, in the few years I've been in this area, the MU/KU rivalry appears to be somewhat of a big deal, but pales in comparison to what I observed in Alabama. Not saying that's good or bad, it is what it is. Just as a casual observer, I'd say Mizzou fans are much less rabid about the whole thing, which could be due to the lack of national success on their part.

OK, dumb was the wrong word. Annoying. That's the word. Like I said, the KU/MU thing is not that big a deal. It's a fun rivalry and I actually find it hilarious how everybody in KS drives around with KU stuff on their cars and walks around with it on their clothing every day of the year.

And YES, I'm inferring that Kansas makes a very big deal out of college sports and it's not like that everywhere. They are like Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama etc. Missouri is a very passive college sports state. MD and VA? Year right, most people in this area don't give a rip about it. Sure, there are plenty of fans, but it's a tiny tiny fraction of the population. Now, NFL is HUGE up here. Philly, Baltimore, Washington etc have die hard fans. As is baseball, hockey etc. I would equate it more to St Louis where people are into the Cards like crazy, but unless MU plays IL, most people don't care about college. Same deal. At least you can go to a Skins game or a Orioles games and people wear MLB or NFL jerseys. Go to a royals game or even a chiefs game and every KU fan there has to be wearing something KU. Again, it's just annoying more than anything. I have yet to see the people in their 40's that are still die hard college fans here at all. College fans here are actually college kids.

Sure. Didn't go to MU and don't care. I will take the MU side in the local KU/MU rivalry, but that's about it. Otherwise, don't care about MU and really could not tell you a thing about the school or the teams.

So, again, the KU/MU thing is like number 20 on the list of problems that the state line creates in metro KC.
