I have been to many Christmas light nights in the USA including Rich's Great Tree here in Atlanta as well as Daley Plaza in Chicago and Rockefeller Centre in New York.
Let me say with all conviction NONE of them can hold a candle to the Plaza lights on Thankgiving night. It is the best- by far- of any other lighting ceremony I have seen.
Honestly, it should be shown on TV nationwide and not just in Kansas City. It is really that good and many people in Kansas City probably don't realize it.

I'm sorry but the Plaza lighting is one of the most ridiculous traditions I have ever heard of. People standing around watching a bunch of lights come on. Seriously, how can that be entertaining especially when going down there is the biggest pain in the ass there is. I find the whole thing embarrassing.

The Plaza lighting wastes insane amounts of electricity. They should consider gradually converting the light strands to LEDs.

Well, bah humbug.

The Plaza light IS silly really. I mean, people flock there and as soon as the lights go on, it's the biggest traffic jam ever, every leaves.

But it's a KC tradition and most people enjoy it for what it is, a thing to do with the family after thanksgiving dinner. Growing up in Loose Park, we just walked. But driving there is no problem either, there is plenty of close parking.

It's just a neat thing to do and when it snows, it's amazing. The plaza and really all of urban KCMO (crown center etc) is amazing during the holidays and few cities compete. I can't fathom how that could be embarrassing.

We enjoy the lighting even though it's nothing special. It's just something we like to do as a family when we can. It's something that is truly "KC".

I think its a nice tradition but I have never understood why all the shops are closed. Wouldn't they make a ton of money?

I think its a good tradition particularly if you have relatives visiting for the holiday. I do agree that the lights are somewhat dated and an upgrade to something animated may refresh the tradition.

I think the animated display on the Downtown Marriot is more of a sight than the Plaza.

Sadly, I don't think I will ever see this. My SO and I are transplants, and we are always out of state at one side of the relatives' or the other for Thanksgiving and likely always will be.

I think that would be a nightmare for them. If it was cold (and it usually is) everyone would pack into the stores to wait for the lighting ceremony to start. There are so many people on the Plaza for that, wall to wall people, and I'm thinking shoplifting could be a problem.

I love going down to the plaza lighting. We usually go after the lights are on to miss the crowds, but the girls love to go down and see all the different colored lights.

The Plaza is good and don't forget that little house at ~77th and Falmouth in OP (or is it PV?). Just east and south of Shawnee Mission East HS.
