Hi everyone!
I am very seriously looking at attending UMKC next spring, and will probably be living with some relatives in the southern suburb of Raymore while attending school in KC. Does anyone know of any good places to look for employment while in school? Someplace that will work with my college schedule? I would prefer to stay within a 20-25 minute drive of Raymore/Belton. I have experience mostly in retail and the grocery business, and would prefer (of course) to work in a safe area of the metro. I would be looking for part time work. Any comments or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!!

There are a lot of retail opportunities adjacent to UMKC, as it's just off the Country Club Plaza and adjacent to Westport, which also has a number of shops. I don't know what their hiring situation is like in the current climate, but I know when I lived near there, there were always signs posted for hiring in the bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.

Lee's Summit has a HUGE retail area and is not far from Raymore. Also Belton has a lot of retail stores.

Check on the Plaza when come to visit. They have alot of high end retail and resturants there and I'm sure pretty high turnover. You could also check out Ward Parkway Mall, south of UMKC, but north of 435. It will be right on your way home. And if you want to be close to Raymore, Belton/ Raymore has a strip of retail and grocery strores. That would make working on the weekends a little easier with no commute and if you are stuck working late you would be close to home.

Good luck with employment and school.

Depending upon what degree you intend to obtain, I would contact employers who hire people with that degree and try to get a foot in the door, so to speak.

If that isn't possible, there are all kinds of businesses that use college students but I would stay away from convenience stores and retail environments such as that. They don't pay nearly enough to be wearing a bullseye on your chest. The chances of that happening are slim, but why not make it zero if you can?
