We are transferring to Kansas City and considering homes in Leawood, KS. We are looking for a safe area with excellent, innovative public schools for our kiddos. Can anyone give any information about Leawood and the specific schools? It is hard to know being out of state. Thank you.

You'll be in the Blue Valley School district if you're south of I-435. You'll be in the Shawnee Mission School district if you're north of I-435. Both are great districts. That part of the SM district is particularly good. And the BV district is good district-wide (with some minor variability). I live fairly close to the southern part of Leawood. If you want a typical, safe, upscale suburban experience, with good schools, it's difficult to go wrong with Leawood.

If you have any specific questions, let me me know.

I agree with the above comments. Can you also add a little about where you (and/or your partner) will be working? Leawood is not a huge suburb, but it's very long and skinny, so commute times can vary widely depending on your destination.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to share a budget range for buying a home.

Thanks for contributing!

You can't go wrong with the public schools in Leawood no matter where you live in the city. The city is zoned to the only Shawnee Mission high school that most of the uppity locals in JoCo still consider to be a "good" school, and the Blue Valley district, which is a top performer in the state and metro.

As burbs go, Leawood is among the best in the metro if not the best. It's a long and not very wide burb running along State Line over ~10 miles but it is essentially two different places: North of I-435 and South of I-435. The northern part of Leawood is older with genteel homes and is very leafy, many homes are on larger lots, and has much more character than the south as well as being closer to a more interesting part of the metro. The southern part of Leawood is typical affluent suburbs (with some VERY affluent neighborhoods) and a lot of retail and more restaurants in the immediate vicinity. I much prefer the northern part of Leawood but it's a bit smaller in area and I suspect you'd pay more per square foot there than in the south (certain neighborhoods like Hallbrook excluded). As others have said, the schools will be fine in either place.
