Honestly you should just take your drive up to 8 hours and pick Chicago, Minneapolis, or Denver. There isn't much around better then KC or where you can experience something really different unless you want to do the Branson thing....

If you really plan ahead for getaways, why not fly? I think KC to Austin is cheap if you book 30 days in advance
I checked Expedia and
It looks like Denver or Chicago would be cheaper

I think you will find the people are just fine. If you do end up coming, just post on the STL forum and people will give you several suggestions on what to do.

In terms of fresh quality produce and variety of produce grown by locals i would say the Soulard Market is better. Half the time at the City Market i see produce with Dole stickers on it. What did these vendors just get the leftovers from Hyvee or something?
