Smile Scott City, KS

I would say that Scott City which is located in Southwestern Kansas does have it's fair share of tornado warnings and tornado watches. However, I have lived in this area my entire life, 37 years, and do not recall a tornado causing "severe" damage to a city or individual. Technology advancements with meterology have given better advanced warning. All towns are also equipped with local warning indicators. We have a variety of weather in this area from a lack of moisture (drought conditions), severe thunderstorms, snow storms but one constant is the wind blows. I hope I didn't scare you; Southwest Kansas is home to me. I think anybody can adapt to anything provided they make that choice to adapt. Good luck to you.

FYI: Scott City is home to Scott County High School Beavers and their Boy's Basketball team won the 4A state basketball championship in 2006!

As an outsider who moved to Scott City, I can only give you my personal opinion on it. We moved there in 1993, I was 15, and my younger brother was 8. For the most part, the adults are pretty great, very accepting of "outsiders". The kids aren't so accepting. I had an easier time making "friends", but even most of them would let me know that I was still an outsider. My younger brother had a really hard time. Kids were constantly picking on him until his sophomore year when he proved what a good football player he is.

My parents owned the "Beach House" at Scott Lake State Park from 1993 until 2005. My mom says she misses the town and the people. But the rest of us are happy not to have to go back.

The schools are a little behind, in my opinion. Example: During my American History class my junior year, I fell asleep one day. The next day, our teacher announced that we would be having a pop quiz since I decided to sleep the previous day. I am the ONLY one who got a 100% on the quiz because it was information that I had learned in 8th grade when we still lived in my hometown.

Scott City is a nice place to spend an afternoon, and my opinions of the town would probably be nicer if the kids had been as accepting of newcomers as the adults are.

Tornado's can occur anywhere. Good Luck in Scott City. I've only driven through the town.

I see that this post was quite a while ago, but i thought i would comment anyway.....We were not mean or unaccepting of Heather's brother. True, he was probably one of the smartest people in our class so he stood out, but i wouldn't say that anyone considered him an outsider, at least not from my perspective. Kelsey is a very smart poerson and i thought we accepted him into the community very well. As far as "outsider" is concerned i find that a very starnge term in western Kansas considering when we graduated probably over half of our class had not been there since kindergarten or whatever. I guess it is from whatever perspective you choose to view it from.
