I am living near Grandview along highway 71. If I go North a few miles
on 71, there is a now-defunct shopping center along the right-hand side of the highway. It was once a huge shopping center! Where else are these dead or dying shopping centers? I have heard mention of other shopping centers that are dying, but being new here I didn\'t recognize the names. I have lived here only 2 weeks, and utimately could end up living anywhere in the metro area after I find a job. Back to shopping centers, I came across a shopping center on NW Barry road. It didn\'t look too healthy. Is this one of the dying centers? I am probably making it sound like KC is unhealthy. I hope not. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is incredibly new and vibrant, which is the reason I came here. I love it. Some areas are dying, obviously, but I suppose their location became undesirable, or whatever. I want to get a handle on the greater KC area. Thanks for you help. |

The malls that are in bad shape right now are Bannister Mall near I-435 in Missouri, Metcalf South Mall in Overland Park, and Metro North Mall in the "northland." The strongest of the indoor malls right now continues to be Oak Park Mall right near Quivira and 95th in Overland Park. This mall attracts people from a large area in this part of the country.

There was a vacant mall in Independence or Blue Springs, not sure exactly which it would be classified in, but you could see it right off of I-70. It was vacant for a long time but in the past year or 2 they turned it into a Walmart Supercenter and that has completely revived that small little area.
Don't even attempt to go to Bannister Mall. Last time I was there I would say it was probably 75% vacant. Nothing worth your time there. Im surprised it is still open. |

thanks for your replies. The information was right on the money about what is
vibrant and what is not. I have explored the locations you mentioned. |
