To my knowledge there is no public transportation. There's some apts. in the downtown area I'm sure and on Iron Street there are a few apt. buildings. You may need a bike or will need to hoof it.

Hi,
I'm from Salina and have lived there for quite sometime. Unfortunately there is no public transport in Salina. There are some apartments close to Ohio where you work. Or there are always taxis, or riding your bike. You should check out the Salina Journal On-line to look for listings for apartments. Salina isn't all that big so you could get an apt. about anywhere. The south part of Salina is the newer part and the north part is what is considered the bad part of town (poorer neighborhoods, older properties).
Cost of living...hmm well I rented a 2 bedroom house in north Salina on for about 565 a mo. (plus utilities) for about 2 years. Most one bedroom apts in complexes are around 4-600 a month.

The previous posters would be correct about the apartments. There are several taxi companies in town. The north end is the lower income family housing, older and smaller housing, but I am not so sure about it being a bad area to live in. Most of the people there are friendly and the number of calls for service in the north end are minimal compared to the southern parts of town. We have a lot of happy residents in the north end. The median age is much higher north of the railroad tracks. I doubt you would have much trouble finding somebody with a similiar schedule to give you a ride to work for a little fuel money. I know there are several areas up there I would not mind living in.

Actually that is just the info I need. I want to go check out Salina to relocate and raise my kids in a better "environment" and this info helps alot. Every town has an "older" section and even though I speculated it would be the north end, now I know. It helps alot when looking online for housing and now trying to find a good school.

You should ask about the WATER!
Salina appears to be a great choice ... but they have problems wtih their water. I'm told that it's drying up and of poor quality. That's why so many people are leaving and why the rent is so cheap.
Heck ... you can get a place cheaper than 565 s month!

Salina has a lower cost of living-however, the wages are relatively low as well. Salina population has increased since I grew up there. Not sure where you're getting people leaving because of low water and low quality water.

i'm from salina also. the housing market is VERY cheap here. in fact i read that salina actually ranks as one of the most affordable cities in the entire country. overall i think the city is going downhill. each year i'm away it seems to become more thuggish. if you're looking for grade schools, i think there's a lot better quality on the south side. there's an exception with the schools on the hill (meadowlark) because that's hands down the nicest housing in the city. however it's also a lot of old money and i feel there's a lot of pricks there, though you can never completely generalize a neighborhood. the south side has great neighborhoods and the parents seem to care quite a bit about things that are going on. check out grace e. stewart school or coronado school. hope this helps!

You can walk or ride a bike anyplace in Salina. It ain't big nuff to have public transportation. The only cities in KS that have public transit are Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City and Lawrence.
